Louise Minchin has faced a lot of trials, but it was when her appendix ruptured a week after having her first child, Mia, that she thought she wasn’t going to make it. The 56-year-old TV presenter opens up about this ‘very dramatic and traumatic’ experience
Broadcaster Louise Minchin feared she was going to die after her appendix burst just six days after giving birth. The former BBC Breakfast presenter said her pain was initially dismissed by doctors before the arrival of her first child Mia, who is now 22.
Minchin, 56, also a triathlete, told Gabby Logan’s The Mid Point podcast: “A week after she was born I had a burst appendix so that was really, really serious. One of the weird things, obviously it was my first pregnancy, so I didn’t know (and) I did keep telling them that I had this pain but they just thought ‘you’re having a baby, what do you expect?’.
“Literally six days after she was born it burst, while I was in hospital, and it was very dramatic and very traumatic and that’s the only thing I’ve ever had help with actually because I just thought I was going to die.
“But otherwise I just tend to, and I really don’t think it’s the answer, just shut things away and just lock them up.”
Minchin has previously spoken of her and Mia’s “stalking nightmare”. But she said: “I’ve been through quite a few things in my life that I just put them in a box and shut it. I’m not saying that’s a good thing but now it’s in a box and hopefully stays locked.”
