Love Island’s Olivia Bowen shares ‘friendly dogs’ alert and tells owners ‘do not do this’

The ex Love Island star mentioned that adhering to a specific rule can help prevent circumstances that endanger both pets and people

Olivia Bowen has issued a stern warning to dog owners, urging them to do one thing. The former Love Island star said following one rule could avoid situations that put not only pets in danger, but people too.

Posting to her Instagram Story, Olivia said: “Just because Alex saw something in our local rec area… If your dog doesn’t have good recall. Do. Not. Let. Them Off. In Public. Spaces. It’s as simple as that.

“Even if it’s an ‘off lead’ area – that still means you need to be able to control your dog off the lead. If your dog cannot be recalled and goes over to another dog ON the lead, YOU are at fault.”

The 31-year-old stressed that her advice also applies to ‘friendly dogs’. She reported having seen some terrible incidents involving seemingly well-mannered canines, children, cars, and even horses.

Olivia went on: “It is dangerous not just for your dog, but for other owners, other dogs, children, cars – the list goes on…You are putting your dogs life at risk.

“You are putting other people at risk. Whether you think your dog is ‘friendly’, it doesn’t matter. We’ve seen ‘friendly’ dogs bite children or other animals or get hit by cars, trodden on by horses, if they are not recalling back to their owner.

“Please for your safety and everyone else’s. Have effective recall or don’t let your dog off the lead in a public space.” Crucially, Olivia isn’t alone in her thoughts either.

Animal charity, Blue Cross, also advises that not all owners should let their dogs off-lead. Not only does this apply when pets have bad recall, but also in the following situations:

  • If the dog has a strong prey drive
  • If the dog is anxious about other dogs or people
  • If the dog must be kept on a lead for legal reasons

Specialists at the non-profit organisation add: “If you cannot let your dog off the lead for any reason, you may feel disappointed or frustrated. But, with the right approach, on lead walks can be just as fun for both you and your dog.

“…Walks should be an enjoyable and positive experience for you both. So where possible, try to avoid situations that you know may cause them to become overly stressed or worried.

“For example, if you dog becomes difficult to control or anxious when there are other dogs about, avoid going to a busy park at peak times.”
