Luke Humphries won the opening night of this year’s Premier League on Thursday but he was left humiliated by Gerwyn Price at a non-televised exhibition event on Saturday
Luke Humphries was thrashed by Gerwyn Price in an exhibition event on Saturday, despite posting one of the highest-ever unofficial averages.
Humphries took on The Iceman in Ennis in a non-televised event, with the statistics from the game later posted on social media. The Englishman won the opening night of this year’s Premier League on Thursday.
But he was brought crashing down to earth just a few days later by Price, who scored a 6-1 win over the 2024 world champion. Humphries finishing with a ridiculous three-dart average of 119.88.
That is a score that has been officially bettered just three times in televised darts. Despite that, he could only notch up one leg against his Welsh opponent.
Price was also in fine form, racking up a three-dart average of 118.64 on his way to a morale-boosting win. Both players raced down to the doubles but it was The Iceman who stayed cool and checked out, leaving Humphries humiliated.
The pair’s combined average of 238.52 is far ahead of the official record (228.65), which was set by Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis in the Premier League eight years ago. Humphries entered Saturday’s event having won in Belfast, picking up a £10,000 cheque in the process.
He beat Nathan Aspinall, Michael van Gerwen and Chris Dobey to put five valuable points on the board. Price meanwhile had crashed out to Dobey in the quarter-finals and could face Humphries in the semi-finals in Glasgow this week.
He will first have to overcome Nathan Aspinall, while Humphries takes on Chris Dobey in his opening game. His win came after reigning world champion Luke Littler was pipped by Van Gerwen in a game for the ages in the quarter-finals, with Humphries sending a warning to his successor.
“He’s by far one of the greatest darts players I’ve seen in my career. I’m not disrespecting myself, but I think he’s the best player in the world. If he goes out, I’m the one to beat but he’s definitely the man to beat,” he said.
“This is what happened to me last year. There’s a target on your back, everyone wants to beat you. You average over 100 and people beat you. He’s still the best player in the world. But for me, I know I can still play at a decent standard and still win things.
“I think this is the hardest Premier League for a long time. Nights like this might not happen as much as you want. Nathan [Aspinall] is playing better, [Gerwyn] Price and Rob [Cross] is playing better and Chris Dobey is in form.
“Last year, Rob, Gezzy and Peter Wright weren’t in form. I do think the PDC made the right call. The right players are in. I think it’s going to be tough. It’s all going to chop and change.”
