Luke Littler was in attendance for Warrington Wolves’ Super League game against Catalan Dragons on Friday night, where he spoke about Manchester United’s fortunes
Luke Littler is a huge Manchester United supporter – but he’d rather see Warrington Wolves win the league.
Darts star Littler is a vocal fan of United and often shares his thoughts on their performances in interviews and on social media. He paraded his PDC World Championship trophy around Old Trafford in January and received a hero’s welcome from the home faithful.
The 18-year-old was given a similar reception when he visited the home of the Warrington Wolves on Friday night for their Super League clash against Catalan Dragons. The Halliwell Jones Stadium was renamed The Luke Littler stadium for the occasion and The Nuke was interviewed while walking around the pitch at half-time by Sky Sports.
He gave a revealing answer when asked whether he’d prefer to see United win the Premier League or Warrington lift the Super League. “Ah, that’s so tough,” he said. “I’ve seen Sir Alex Ferguson ’s last league title, so I’d have to say Wire winning the league.”
His answer may have something to do with the fact that United sit 15th in the Premier League and have won just four of their 14 league games under Ruben Amorim ahead of Saturday’s game against Everton. By contrast, Warrington sit top of the nascent Super League table, having opened their campaign with back-to-back wins, after beating the Dragons 18-12.
Littler grew up in Warrington and explained his connection to the rugby league side. “It means a lot,” he explained. “For myself, what I’ve done over the past 12, 18 months. The support from the lads and all the staff and everyone at Warrington Wolves. Tonight’s going to be a very special night.”
He added: “This is where I grew up: it’s the local rugby team. I’ve been here for years, in the south stand, cheering the boys on next to the drum. To have the stadium named after me for one night only, it’s going to be a big night.”
And speaking ahead of the visit to Warrington Wolves, he underlined his current feelings. “It was just good to get out and be stood with all the crazy lot,” he said. “I wouldn’t say (it will feel better than Manchester United ), but it will probably be one of the biggest atmospheres.
“What do I need to do to make (my) stadium naming rights permanent? Good question – I don’t think it should ever happen, unless it does become a thing in a few years’ time (by winning more world titles). All teams have got sponsorship deals and obviously that’s why it’s named The Halliwell Jones now.”
