The Masked Singer judging panel decided to send home Toad In The Hole on Saturday night, but contestant Macy Gray stormed off stage after Jonathan Ross delivered the verdict
The Masked Singer UK left viewers in shock on Saturday night after Toad In The Hole stormed off stage, before later being unveiled as singer Macy Gray.
In dramatic scenes, the I Try icon fled backstage after the judging panel revealed they had opted to save Bear in the sing-off. Host Joel Dommett then quipped: “Toad in the Hole has gone already,” before later adding: “What is going on?”
Viewers then watched as the star returned to the stage a few moments later, where she shared her identity and responded with one word answers to the judges. It was later reported that ITV bosses had spent nearly an hour trying to coax Macy back on stage, after she was “totally blindsided” to be one of the first to leave the new series.
Speaking to The Sun, a source revealed that the singer may have been expecting to reach the later stages of the competition, after making the final in the US version in 2023. They said: “This has never happened on The Masked Singer before.
“When Macy stormed off stage everyone was frozen in shock but as soon as she reached backstage, crew removed her mask so they could talk her down. Macy was almost shellshocked to start with and was basically gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version – when obviously she did brilliantly – so was totally blindsided.”
And now, it has been revealed that the chaos didn’t just end with Macy looking unimpressed when she eventually returned to the stage. A TV insider has told The Mirror that the American singer refused to take part in the post-show interview, which celebrities have done over the years after leaving the show.
A TV source said: “It is normal for the celebs to answer some questions for a Q&A sent out by ITV but Macy didn’t do it. This is only second time in history of the show this has happened so it shows how unhappy she was after the show.”
What’s more, Macy reportedly reacted in a similar manner in the Australian version of the programme three years ago. Judge Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes said she ‘refused to leave’ despite being told it was time to take off her mask and say goodbye.
We asked Mirror readers if they thought Macy was right to storm off stage, and a whopping 93 percent said ‘No’. Around 3,568 people took part in our poll, and a hefty 3,323 branded the move ‘completely unnecessary’.
Voicing their thoughts in the comments section, one reader penned: “I think she expected to last as long as the American version, but she absolutely ruined the Roxette song! Right choice to leave, really bad behaviour over the vote.”
Another posted: “She wants to get a grip. It’s just an entertainment programme and she’s going in a huff because she was voted off.”
“These celebrities act so entitled all the time, they need to get in the real world,” while a third, while another added: “Storming off stage like she did, has done her popularity no favours whatsoever.
“Her childish behaviour was shocking, and when she did come back an hour later, you could see that she was clearly upset and had been crying. Very unprofessional.”
Meanwhile, six percent described her actions as ‘completely justified’, as one watcher wrote on X: “It’s pathetic how Macy Gray is out. Far and above the best singer tonight,a good show ruined by idiots voting for best costume.”
