Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the case of missing Madeleine McCann, has moved into emergency accommodation after being released from prison in Germany

The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been moved into emergency accommodation after being released from jail.

Rapist Christian Brueckner, who denies involvement, formally declared himself homeless in the city of Neumunster, 40 miles north of Hamburg, on Thursday. Stephan Beitz, press secretary for the city of Neumunster, told the Mirror: “He registered as homeless in Neumunster yesterday and we have accomodated him for safety reasons.” Brueckner had been pictured being driven out of Sehnde prison, near Hanover, on Wednesday after his release from a seven-year sentence for the rape of a pensioner.

The monster was photographed heading straight for a McDonald’s – next to a Baby One store, which sells baby and toddler clothes.

He was being driven by his lawyer Friedrich Fuelscher, whose offices are in Kiel, just over 20 miles north of Neumunster.

Brueckner was named as prime suspect by German prosecutors in June 2020. Despite claiming to have evidence he abducted and killed then three-year-old Madeleine, they have not charged him.

He must wear an ankle tag for five years and faces recall to prison if he breaks any of the conditions of his release, including moving house without telling probation staff.

Brueckner must appear in court next month in Oldenburg where he is charged with insulting a prison officer. He could be ordered to pay a fine.

But despite a lengthy police investigation, detectives appear to be no closer to charging him over Madeleine’s disappearance.

He was cleared last October of a string of sex crimes he was accused of carrying out in Portugal. Prosecutors are awaiting the outcome of an appeal against those verdicts, lodged in Germany’s Federal Court of Justice.

Brueckner was living in a ramshackle farmhouse on the edge of Praia da Luz when the toddler vanished from the Ocean Club resort while her parents Kate and Gerry dined at a nearby tapas restaurant. He denies any involvement in her disappearance.
