Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner wants police protection for release

Germany’s prison service is preparing to release of the chief suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, Christian Brueckner, as his seven-year rape sentence comes to an end

The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has requested police protection for when he’s released next week.

Christian Brueckner is expected to be freed no earlier than next Wednesday, and there’s no plans to transfer him to another prison before that date, according to his lawyer Friedrich Fuelscher.

Mr Fuelscher said : “Our client Christian B. is currently serving his prison sentence in the Sehnde Correctional Facility. He will be released on September 17, 2025.

“Contrary to rumors to the contrary, there has been no early release, nor has a transfer to another facility been planned or carried out.

“The defense has contacted the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice to request appropriate measures in the interest of our client’s safety and the maintenance of order within the facility. A response has not yet been received. To ensure Christian B.’s safety, the undersigned is in close contact with the responsible police station.”

The monster is currently in Sehnde prison in Germany, where he is serving a seven-year sentence for the rape of an elderly woman in the same town Madeleine disappeared from.

It comes after the only journalist to speak to him behind bars assessed the paedophile as having “no remorse” about his crimes.

Journalist Ulrich Oppold has said that, not only does the 48-year-old feel no remorse about the crimes of which he was convicted, he believes he does not need rehabilitating.

Speaking to The Sun, Mr Oppold said the convicted rapist remained “ice cool” as he asked him whether he regretted anything that “happened in the past”. He said: “I asked him, ‘Do you regret anything? Is there any kind of remorse you feel towards anything, what happened in the past?’. And his answer was, ‘This is one of these questions I definitely don’t want to answer’.

“My impression was there was a man sitting in front of me who doesn’t feel any guilt, any remorse.” When he went on to quiz Brueckner over court claims he was a psychopath, to which he replied: “I’m not dangerous.”

Brueckner was named as the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case in 2020, but is yet to be formally charged, and he denies having any involvement in her disappearance. German police are investigating his possible involvement in the case, and last month chief prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters claimed there was evidence against him.

However, he added that the evidence was not strong enough to “make a guilty verdict likely”. He said: “He is not just our number one suspect, he’s our only suspect.”
