Karla Sofía Gascón, who was in Emilia Pérez, claims Madonna is backing her and invited her to her post-Oscars party in the wake of the outrage over her social media posts
Singer Madonna is secretly supporting under-fire Karla Sofía Gascón in the wake of her social media shame, the actress claims.
The Spanish actress posted on Instagram thanking the singer for “all the love you have shown me”, adding how she had been invited to her post-Oscars bash. She also thanked her “fellow Hollywood professionals” for backing her too, as she fights back at her critics.
Alongside a pic of Madonna hugging her, Karla said: “Madonna, I want to thank you for all the love you have shown me, for your invitation to the party you gave after the Oscars and for your words of love and strength. I love you. I also take this opportunity to thank all my fellow Hollywood professionals who expressed their support and admiration for me that night. Both at the gala and the party.”
Madonna is the first star to seemingly back Karla which comes after a slew of offensive posts made by the actress. The pop star had previously posted a picture of Karla on her Instagram in Emilia Perez, with the words “wow” written underneath her image.
The actress had previously said in an interview of Madonna’s support, although this predated the row over her social posts. She said: “Madonna was crying so much after the screening in New York….she told me: ‘You’re amazing!’ She was crying and crying. I said: ‘Madonna, please. It’s only a film. Be happy!’”
The row began after a journalist dug up old social media posts by Karla. In 2021, Karla tweeted that “the West should ban Islam” and, a year earlier, described George Floyd, as “a drug addict swindler.”
She also defended Adolf Hitler by saying: “I do not understand such world war against Hitler — he simply had his opinion about the Jews.” Karla even insulted the Academy itself, describing the 2021 Oscars as “an ugly, ugly gala” similar to “a Black Lives Matter demonstration.” Netflix later distanced themselves from the actress.
In the wake of the posts being unearthed, Karla skipped the Oscars red carpet, as well as several awards shows beforehand. She also did not attend the Oscar nominee dinner at the Academy Museum. The controversy was also referenced by Oscars host Conan O’Brien in his opening monologue.
“I loved Anora, I really did. Little fact for you, Anora uses the ‘F’ word 479 times. That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist. You tweeted what?!”
He added: “I’m having fun. Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight,” as the camera panned towards her. With clasped hands, she bowed her head and blew a kiss before mouthing the words: “Thank you.”
