Brit hiker Sarah Jane Thompson, 26, died after horror floods hit Majorca this week, and the Civil Guard have confirmed today that a second body believed to be that of her missing boyfriend Alex Johnson has also been found
A missing British hiker who was last seen desperately trying to save his girlfriend from horror flooding in Majorca that killed her has also been found dead.
Sarah Jane Thompson, 26, was found dead on Wednesday in the Torrent de Pareis region of the Tramuntana mountain range after sudden floods swept the holiday hotspot. A huge search and rescue operation was launched for her 32-year-old missing boyfriend Alexander Johnson, who disappeared along with her on Tuesday.
On Friday the search continued for Mr Johson in the canyon known as the Torrent de Pareis. And just after 11.15am local time a Civil Guard spokesman said: “The Civil Guard has found the body of a young man which pending official identification, corresponds to that of the man who disappeared on Tuesday while he was hiking in the Torrent de Pareis.”
A total of 10 people were rescued amid the worst of the flooding on September 3, as a spokesperson for the Spanish Civil Guard said on Wednesday: “The Civil Guard yesterday rescued 10 people who were trapped in the Torrent de Pareis by a torrent of water. Our Greim unit established an operation throughout the day there to prevent possible accidents involving hikers who were in the area given the forecast of heavy rain.” The Tramuntana mountain range has a riverbed that can be hiked during the dry months, but can suddenly transform into a dangerous torrent during flash flooding, as it gathers a large amount of rainwater that falls on the mountain and funnels it down the valley.
The couple are said to have been on a hiking expedition during their holiday when Sarah was swept away by the strong current, with other hikers saying that Alexander carried away in the moments that followed as he tried to rescue her. Authorities had reportedly set up a preparatory operation in the area after mountain walkers continued to visit the area, despite weather warnings being issued.
After a warm, dry summer, the Balearic Islands and a large area of Spain’s eastern coast has been hit by heavy rain and strong winds this week. The America’s Cup sailing event in Barcelona was cancelled on Tuesday and races postponed due to high winds, and an ‘orange risk’ alert was in place for the region over potential danger to life from storm damage.
