Flowers and Mother’s Day are the perfect combination. If you’re looking to get a flowerbox letter as part of your gift, here’s the perfect way to assemble it and make it look like an expensive bouquet
Mother’s Day is around the corner and if you haven’t decided on a gift by now, a box packed with your mother’s favourite flowers is always a good idea, but if you’re concerned about whether they’ll turn up looking as fresh as they can be, you’re not alone.
Although letterbox flowers are the easiest and most convenient option, they still need proper care to last as many days as possible. According to Bloom & Wild, the UK’s most-loved online florist, if their flowers arrive looking like they need some TLC, it’s nothing to worry about. Their website states: “As our flowers arrive in bud, it’s totally normal for some stems to arrive looking a bit droopy or squashed. Don’t worry! They’ll perk up after a few days once popped in water.”
They add that by giving your flowers some water and a quick spruce they’ll look as fresh as ever in as little as 24 hours, but we’ve asked the experts for the best tips to ensure your flowers can look good enough to display as soon as they’re out of the box.

How can I make letterbox flowers look nice?
LeAnne Samuelson from Prestige Botanicals tells the Mirror that as soon as your flowers arrive, they’ll need to be unpacked so they have a chance to breathe and that they’ll most likely reach their best stage in a couple of days, but prep is everything.
“Flowers need time to rehydrate, absorb nutrients from the flower food, and gradually open up,” she tells The Mirror. “With proper care, they will reach their full beauty within a couple of days.”
Once the letterbox flower arrives, it’s crucial for its survival to be able to breathe without damaging its delicate stems. LeAnne also suggested “trimming about 2-3 cm off each stem at a 45-degree angle to enhance water absorption.”
She also said to place the flowers in a clean vase with fresh room-temperature water, adding the provided flower food to nourish them. It’s crucial to allow the flowers to hydrate, ideally overnight, before arranging them – and remove any leaves submerged to prevent bacterial growth.
She added: “It’s common for flowers to appear droopy upon arrival; hydration will help them perk up. When arranging, start with larger focal flowers, then add smaller blooms and greenery, varying stem heights for a natural look.”
For a letterbox flower delivery, roses, tulips, carnations, alstroemeria, and chrysanthemums are the most popular options, especially during the spring season. As the weather starts to warm put, a touch of colour can brighten the mood.
LeAnne also highlighted the importance of choosing the right base and displaying it in a cool area away from the sunlight and heat sources. The water must be changed every two days to ensure its freshness.
“If some blooms remain closed, placing them in a slightly warmer room can encourage them to open, and lightly misting the petals can provide extra hydration,” she explained.
On average, flowers last five to 10 days with proper care, but this varies depending on the type of flower. This is why it’s important for them to have fresh water, trim the stems when needed and avoiding direct sunlight and heat.
Flowers can be used to celebrate any occasion. Sending flowers on Mother’s Day is a meaningful and thoughtful gift that will show her how much you care. But pretty as they might be, they also require attention to last the maximum amount of time.
