Make lettuce last for 4 weeks with one kitchen item that works as storage hack

Millions of Brits are trying to save money as we continue to feel the squeeze on our wallets and one way you can do that is by reducing food waste – and these tips could help.

Lettuce is one of those foods that often ends up in the bin, going off before you’ve had a chance to use the whole bag. However, there’s a trick to extend the lifespan of this leafy green, making it last for four weeks – meaning you’ll likely actually finish a whole bag.

Food expert Armen Adamjan, who posts on TikTok as @creative_explained, has shared a storage hack that will keep your lettuce fresh for longer. The expert claims that his tips will both save you money and decrease your food waste.

For lettuce, he advises against storing it unwrapped or in the plastic packaging it comes in. Instead, wrap the lettuce heads in kitchen foil and then put them in the fridge.

Using this method, they should last for up to four weeks, meaning you’ll actually get around to using them up, rather than eating half the lettuce one day and then binning it a few days later.

And it’s not just lettuce Armen has shared tips for storing. When it comes to cherries, he says: “Not sure why cherries come covered, but leave them uncovered in the fridge. Cherries need to breathe. They’ll be good for a week that way.”

For potatoes, he recommends storing them in a basket and keeping them in a cool, dark location, away from sunlight and out of the fridge.

When it comes to avocados, he suggests storing them in an airtight container filled with water. Armen claims that if you follow this hack, they will stay green for up to three weeks.

One surprising tip is to avoid keeping cucumbers in the fridge. Instead, he suggests placing them in a ziploc bag with holes poked in it.

“Leave them out on the counter, they’ll last longer. In the fridge, they just get wet and mushy. On the contrary, lemons do best in the fridge.”
