Elliot also got a free coffee while he was shopping
A man made an entire meal for less than £1 with ingredients from Waitrose – including dessert – and got a free coffee. Dad of two Elliot Jeory’s bargain potato meal saw him head to the supermarket to see what he could get for £1.
Elliot bought an onion for 12p, six potatoes for 48p, two carrots for 21p and even had enough left over for a banana for 18p. And he got a free coffee.
The 39-year-old says his simple trick is to always buy the vegetables separately, which allows for the low prices. “Even though I couldn’t buy any meat, it is still a nice tasty meal,” said Elliot, from Preston, Lancashire.
“And I’ve even got a banana for dessert. So a two-course meal really.”
In the video, Elliot washes the potatoes before cutting them into small cubes. He then boils them in a pan for seven minutes while chopping up the onion and carrots. These are then fried for 10 minutes, with the potatoes drained and added.
The dish is cooked for another 15 minutes on a medium heat for the potato hash to turn a brown colour. The total cost was 99p – leaving Elliot with 1p in change.
