Matheus Nunes scored the goal to give Manchester City all three points in their huge clash with Aston Villa – but don’t expect him to be watching the highlights
Manchester City star Matheus Nunes has revealed why he doesn’t watch football in his spare time. Nunes, 26, was hero of City’s late 2-1 victory at home to Aston Villa on Tuesday, scoring the winning goal in the 93rd minute to significantly boost their Champions League hopes.
Pep Guardiola’s side moved into third place and although they’ve played one game more, they’re four points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea. The top five will qualify for the Champions League this season, making it an even bigger scrap than for the usual four spots.
Nunes’ tap-in at the back post after brilliant work from Jeremy Doku gave City supporters a much-needed reason to cheer after a largely disappointing campaign. Fans have gotten used to seeing their team in the latter stages of the Champions League at this time of year but they’ve had to watch from afar on TV this spring – apart from Nunes, who doesn’t watch at all.
“No, I don’t really watch football,” the midfielder turned right-back admitted. “I just don’t watch football. I don’t know why. It’s just because our daily routine is just full of football. You know, it’s the same as if you worked in computers and you’re going home, you don’t want to then go straight to the computer.”

Nunes isn’t the only high-profile footballer who doesn’t let the sport consume their home life. Arsenal defender Ben White claims to never watch football and the same goes for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Instead, the eyes will be on Nunes when City play their FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. “The game against Villa was a pure example of how difficult the games can be,” the Portuguese said. “Nottingham Forest have been doing an amazing season and we have to be ready for it on Sunday.”

Nunes has been at City for two seasons now after signing from Wolves for £53million, and although Guardiola recently labelled him not ‘clever enough’ to play in midfield, his boss was full of praise on Tuesday.
“He’s a person who is incredibly loved,” Guardiola hailed. “When he talks in the media it’s always serious but in the locker room he’s the complete opposite, always laughing. He’s playing not in a natural position, like Nico [Gonzalez].
“If you told me at the beginning of the season you are going to play at the end of the season to reach a final and to fight to qualify for the Champions League with Matheus and Nico at full-back I would say what are you talking about. He has done well, has incredible pace and is a different type of player to Rico [Lewis].
