A man died at a busy scrapyard in Manchester when a car reportedly fell on top of him.

The unnamed man, in his 40s, was pronounced dead after emergency services were called to J Davidson on Atlantic Street, Trafford, in the Broadheath area of Altrincham on Wednesday afternoon. The road was shut off as Greater Manchester Police (GMP) investigated the tragedy.

The force said today that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are ongoing. The ManchesterEveningNews reported the victim suffered a cardiac arrest after an object, believed to be a car, fell on him. The man wasn’t a J Davidson employee, and worked for a company based in Lithuania, the publication reported.

An air ambulance was also pictured landing at the yard. Scrap firm J Davidson said its “heartfelt condolences go to his family and loved ones affected by the loss”. A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: “We are aware and working with Greater Manchester Police.”

GMP today confirmed the man had died in a statement which read: “Emergency services were called to an incident at a business on Atlantic Street, Broadheath, at around 3.15pm yesterday. Sadly, a man in his 40s was pronounced dead. Enquiries are currently ongoing.” Craven Road, which was closed off as police, paramedics and fire crews all responded to the scene, has now reopened.

We are committed to offering support to the family and those affected. We are fully co-operating with the police and Health and Safety Executive.”

The spokesman added that until the police and HSE concluded their enquiries, they were unable to comment on the cause of the incident.
