Man drives seven hours to try ‘England’s best Guinness’ and is left fuming

A YouTube favourite went on a seven-hour quest to try what he believed was the best pint of Guinness available in the whole of England but he was ‘not happy’ by the end of it

A popular YouTuber drove seven hours from Carlisle to London to try what he believed to be the “best Guinness in England” – but he was “not happy” with what he got.

Danny, who runs the Honest Places YouTube channel, started off his video by explaining: “Good afternoon from a service station on the outskirts of Leicester where today I am five hours into a seven hour journey to try England’s best Guinness. Now, I have researched this quite a lot, quite intensively, and I have narrowed it down to this one pub and that one pub is the Devonshire in London.”

The Manchester-based content creator eventually reached the capital where he parked his camper van in Hampstead Heath before spending the evening sampling creamy pints.

His first pub stop was Quinns in Hawley Road where said he was handed a glass of Guinness that cost him £6.50. He rated his first pint as a 5/10.

He then ventured to the King & Queen boozer on Foley Street where he tried their own ale which he rated a 6/10.

Next, he visited The Toucan in Soho after reading that it was among the best pints of Guinness available in London.

Giving his take, he said: “Clean glass. No one is drinking anything other than Guinness in here. Seven quid. About right in London innit, seven quid? Good head to liquid ratio.”

He added: “Ohhh. I’ll tell you what. That is eight and a half. The temperature is perfect. Hmm. That is decent that. That is decent. You know it is a good Guinness when you can knock it back and it doesn’t even feel like you are really gulping the drink.

“That is beautiful, it is going down nice and smooth. Sweet. I am happy with that. Even with seven quid, I am happy with that, it sets us up for the best Guinness. And you expect a 10/10 for the best Guinness.

“Let’s crack on to the Devonshire and have the best pint of Guinness outside of Ireland.”

So, after his seven-hour trek, and his so far mixed bag of pints, would the Devonshire live up to his lofty expectations? The Devonshire’s reputation is renowned, with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Bono and Margot Robbie enjoying its pints. And GQ are among many to crown it the best place in England to enjoy a Guinness.

Danny’s first impressions were strong when he realised the pub on Denman Street was busy and everyone, like in The Toucan, was sipping Guinness.

After ordering his pint, which he paid £7 for, Danny took it outside because the place was “absolutely slammed” and he eventually tried his first sip.

But unable to hide the disappointment on his face, he said: “Seven. Nowt special.”

He continued: “I had better in the other one. Maybe seven and a half at a push but I am not going to pretend, so yeah, that is the Guinness here.

“It is what it is, you can’t win them all, it is not that creamy either, you can tell. The other one was creamier. Seven and a half.

“I’m not happy with that. That is about a seven and this has been raved about. Now I am not a Guinness connoisseur but you know, that isn’t good.”
