An American man recently came across an abandoned McDonald’s in the US and shared a video of himself exploring the site, including the menu board showing the prices for the drive-thru
A seasoned traveller recently found an abandoned McDonald’s in a remote location in the US. Chris, an American content travel creator on a mission to visit every country in the world, recently posted a video on social media of himself exploring the deserted restaurant.
He revealed that this site by the fast food giant is in Adak, Alaska and was abandoned in 1994. The travel-lover, who has visited 167 countries so far, noted that the prices for the drive-thru can still be seen. The TikTok video shows that some parts of the restaurant have been boarded up but can be recognised as McDonald’s by its classic red, sloping roof of the 1990s.
It is surrounded by overgrown grass but the property itself and the menu board displaying the prices for the drive-thru have largely remained in good condition.
Chris explained that Adak, a city in Alaska, used to house a military base with 6,000 residents at its peak and this McDonald’s venue was built in 1986 to serve the population of the base.
However, it was closed up when the base was decommissioned in the 1990s. Derelict suburban houses can also be seen in the clip.
The well-travelled content creator said: “At this McDonald’s, everything from the outside to the drive-thru windows remain untouched almost like a capsule in time.”
Turning his attention towards the drive-thru menu board, he mentioned that a Big Mac used to be $2.45 (£1.82) and customers at the time were able to get Happy Meal toys based on the 1990s American children’s cartoon TV series Bobby’s World.
According to the menu, six pieces of Chicken McNuggets cost $2.35 (£1.74), a Filet-O-Fish burger was $1.95 (£1.44), a cheeseburger was $1.09 (81p) and the price of a hamburger was just $0.99 (73p).
A Breakfast Burrito cost $1.49 (£1.10) while an Egg McMuffin cost $1.95 (£1.44). Chris added: “They sometimes call this the loneliest McDonald’s in the world given its location way out on an island between Alaska and Russia.
“In fact, the only way to get here is on a four-hour twice-weekly flight from Anchorage.” The travel fan felt the McDonald’s site has a “weird, creepy nostalgia from the 1990s.”
His TikTok video has garnered 587,700 views, 16,600 likes and more than 100 comments, so far.
One viewer said: “Omg I miss that price board and the prices.” Another added: “I would take that drive thru menu. That’s awesome.”
Others thought the prices for that time weren’t cheap as they left comments, including “this would be expensive too because it’s Alaska”,”prices in AK [are] a lot higher in general” and “those prices were expensive then lol crazy.”
Some users commented on how the abandoned McDonald’s restaurant looks. A different viewer observed: “Notice how the sign hasn’t been destroyed and the closure boards are still intact. A reflection of the people around there.”
A second remarked: “Even the colour of the menu board is nostalgic. That brownie earth tone is what it was known for during that decade.”
