A man was found dead in a quiet park as police searched the area after a woman was left with a serious head injury.

Concerned locals raised the alarm to North Yorkshire Police after fears that an assault had taken place in the quaint village of Naburn just outside of York. When officers arrived at the scene shortly before 6pm on Monday, August 11, they found a woman who had a serious injury to the head and needed urgent attention.

An air ambulance landed at the scene and she was airlifted to the hospital for further treatment.

Police began a search for the suspect of the assault who had left the scene, but as they looked around the park, they found the body of a man in a nearby children’s play area.

According to ITV News, North Yorkshire Police revealed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the man’s death, although a formal investigation has begun into both incidents in the park.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Our thanks go to members of the public who supported the victim of the assault and helped at the scene of the incident.

“We realise the events in Naburn will have caused shock and concern in the village. However, officers believe that the wider community were not at risk and that both parties involved in the incident knew each other. During the incident, a beige coloured whippet dog escaped from the property. If anyone finds the dog, please contact the police on 101, quoting reference number 12250150460.”

Speaking to YorkMix, one Naburn local said: “We’re all shocked here in Naburn this morning, we’re out looking for the dog, because the lady’s in hospital and she’s asking for her.

While another local added described the incident as “highly unsettling”. They added: “Such a tragic accident to happen in beautiful Naburn, we walk our dogs here and would never in a million years expect something so upsetting to happen here. Our thoughts go out to those affected.”

With many locals understandably left frightened at the incident, officers have been quick to urge the village not to worry. The news comes just a matter of days after four bodies were found in just three days at the bottom of the nearby cliffs of Whitby.

North Yorkshire Police’s coastal team said the fourth woman’s body was found at Sandsend, just below the cliffs behind the main car park. The four separate tragedies are not linked in any way, the force added.

In a statement relating to the latest incident, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Teams from the police, ambulance, coastguard, lifeboat and fire service attended. The woman’s body was recovered at 12.55pm and the scene was reopened at 2.15pm following extensive enquiries.”
