Man shops at Aldi with just one quid and feels ‘lucky’ after what it buys him

It’s been a long time since £1 could really get you far in life but one man proved carrying just a quid with him in the supermarket can still buy enough for a meal

Shopping on a budget is pretty much on everyone’s mind at the moment. Nowadays it can cost a lot of money to pick up a meal, although one man managed £1 in Waitrose recently.

Eating out can be expensive but even at home could get costly with the average food bill on a weekly shop worth around £70-£94 for just two people. As for a basic shop, this is still around £60-£70, while a more comprehensive shop, including non-food items, could reach £90-£100 or more. Now one man showed how £1 could surprisingly get you far in Aldi.

In a TikTok post recently, user @costoflivingcrisistips, who boasts 415,000 followers, revealed how he shopped on a budget.

Calling it the “Aldi £1 meal challenge”, he revealed how he went straight to the vegetable aisle for his first item.

He said: “I went for a jacket potato for 24p and with a potato, I’m going to go for a tin of baked beans and a tin of sardines which was 59p but is now 47p, must be my lucky day.”

Now at home, he decided to whip up the recipe using the three items which cost him just 98p.

“Make sure you wash the spuds, then pierce with a fork or knife,” he explained. “Stick in the microwave for 15 minutes, heat up the beans in a pan and drain the sardines and chop them up.”

He explained when pouring the baked beans on the potato you need to make sure you don’t use all the juice.

As for the sardines, you can put them on top or next to the beans, whatever you prefer.

Detailing his food shop, the savvy shopper said: “So the jacket potato was 24p, the beans 27p and the sardines 47p, total cost 98p. There’s 16g of protein in the beans and 22g of protein in the sardines, so 38g of protein for less than a quid on a meal, good deal.”

The post racked up 8,100 likes and 400 comments since it was shared. One said: “It will keep you alive but that’s it.” Another added: “Next time get some cheese.” Then a third chimed in: “I was ready to mock you, but that’s a hearty meal.”

It can be hard shopping on a budget but recently he tried the £1 challenge in Waitrose. With his £1, he got an onion, five baby potatoes, two carrots and a banana. The vegetables and the spuds he made a hash with, while the fruit was his “dessert”.
