Man tries Tesco, M&S, Waitrose and Morrisons breakfasts and comes to same verdict

Gary Hanna, who runs the Gary Eats YouTube channel, has been left less than impressed with the breakfast offers at major supermarkets and has called for action to improve the quality of the food

A YouTuber was left underwhelmed by the Tesco Big Breakfast in his ongoing search for a top-notch supermarket brekkie. Gary Hanna, who runs the Gary Eats channel, has previously expressed dissatisfaction with the breakfasts at Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Morrisons.

He often criticises the quality of ingredients in these supermarket cafes, and it seems it was no different when he visited Tesco in Byfleet, Surrey.

Gary kicked off the video expressing his disappointment, stating “the food in these supermarkets hasn’t been up there”. At Tesco, he ordered the Big Breakfast, which set him back £9.50, but the absence of mushrooms, tomatoes and fried bread meant it was off to a poor start.

Addressing his viewers, he commented: “The thing that makes the breakfast is the sausage. (Gary then shows both sides of the sausages). Cremated. Uncremated. It’s not evenly cooked and nor is that one. They’re not very good. They’re cheap, in house-ones.

“Come on supermarkets. Get out there, get on to the shop floor, get some of the decent sausages that you sell here and showcase them. Just try and upgrade what you’re offering,” reports the Express.

However, Gary had kinder words for the bacon, which he said, despite looking “unappealing”, was actually “really tasty”.

However, the praise ended there. He described the hash browns as “a little bit of a plate filler” and suggested supermarkets should swap them out for fried bread because “they actually have some flavour”.

He confessed he’s “not mad about the beans”.

Gary also sampled the Breakfast Hash, which consisted of hash browns topped with a fried egg and spring onions. His review of this dish was much more favourable, stating “I’d have it all day long”.

Summarising his experience, the vlogger sarcastically queried: “Is this up there with all the other epically great breakfasts I’ve had? Unfortunately, it is. Because it’s not that good.”

In Gary’s opinion, the Big Breakfast was “lacking in certain ingredients and some of the ingredients that were on that plate, were just bad quality”.

“If you serve quality ingredients, customers will go ‘woah’,” he added. “I’ll come to the price, £9.50 it was. What margin is on that? I’d say the margin is quite high.”

But his view isn’t shared by everyone. On X, Jade Evans said her Big Breakfast at Tesco was “the best cooked breakfast I’ve ever had”. She added: “Everything is cooked to perfection”.

Another, William Connoly, said his meal from the supermarket chain was “a thing of beauty”.
