Man Utd could still complete one more transfer with talks over move ongoing

Manchester United managed to offload a number of players during the summer transfer window, and youngster Sam Mather still remains hopeful that he can secure an exit

Sam Mather is still exploring his dwindling options to leave Manchester United after a move to Turkey collapsed.

The 21-year-old was understood to be close to a move to Kayserispor on Friday, before their transfer window closed. However, Manchester Evening News report that United pulled the plug on the deal, believing there wasn’t enough time to get it done.

Mather came through the academy at Old Trafford, but has yet to make a senior appearance. He did travel with the first team on their pre-season tour in 2024, but has thus far failed to make the grade.

The winger spent the second half of last season on loan with Tranmere and is hoping for another move to help kickstart his professional career.

Kayserispor had agreed a permanent move for the youngster, with the fee, buyback clause and personal terms all given the green light. But that move will now have to wait until January, after United’s deadline was not met.

He may still get his wish granted though, with BBC Sport claiming an imminent exit could still be on the cards. Serbia and Israel are the only two UEFA-registered leagues with windows open, while teams in the UAE and Qatar are still able to sign players.

While Mather’s move to Turkey didn’t materialise, Andre Onana did make the switch, signing for Trabzonspor on a season-long loan deal.

The error-prone keeper has fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim, with Altay Bayindir getting the nod in the first three Premier League games of the season. And with the arrival of Senne Lammens on deadline day, Onana has been deemed surplus to requirements.

Speaking about Onana’s exit, Amorim said: “You can be really experienced but in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail.

“I think we understood that this needed a change. Sometimes it’s hard to point why. It’s the performance, the moments. The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers.”

Tyrell Malacia was also tipped to swap England for Turkey, but has remained at United – and included in their Premier League squad.

The Dutch defender is the only member of United’s ‘bomb squad’ from this summer to stick with the club. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony all moved on, but Malacia could yet force his way back into contention.
