Man Utd finally agree Alejandro Garnacho exit as Chelsea strike £40m transfer deal

Alejandro Garnacho has been part of Manchester United’s bomb squad throughout the summer transfer window and Chelsea have finally agreed a deal to sign the exiled star

Manchester United have agreed a £40million deal with Chelsea for winger Alejandro Garnacho. The two clubs have agreed a fixed £40m fee, ending Garnacho’s outcast status at United, after his falling out with boss Ruben Amorim.

As part of the deal, the fourth largest sale United’s history after Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Angel Di Maria, the Red Devils have secured a 10 per cent sell-on fee. United dug their heels in and stood firm on their valuation of Garnacho, having rejected Chelsea’s initial offer of £25m.

Garnacho was left out of United’s starting line-up for their 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham and publicly criticised Amorim in the immediate aftermath of the loss in Bilbao. That led to the 20-year-old winger being exiled by Amorim and omitted from United’s pre-season tour of the US and made to train in isolation with fellow outcasts Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Marcus Rashford, who has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan.

A frustrated Garnacho said after the loss to Spurs: “Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don’t know.

“The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards.”

His brother, Roberto, fanned the flames by stating on social media: “Working as no one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus.”

Garnacho wasn’t involved in United’s opening three games of the season, starting with a 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal. The Red Devils then followed up the defeat with a 1-1 draw away to Fulham on Sunday.

Should Manchester United have accepted £40million for Alejandro Garnacho? Have your say in the comments section.

That was before the biggest humiliation of Amorim’s tenure. Wednesday saw United dumped out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier side Grimsby Town.

Amorim’s men were 2-0 down until the closing stages, as Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire scored to send the game to penalties. But misses from Mbeumo and fellow new signing Matheus Cunha saw Grimbsy win 12-11 on penalties, booking their place in the second round.
