Amorim has agreed to succeed Erik ten Hag at United, who have agreed to pay Sporting the 39-year-old coach’s £8.3million release clause, but Sporting are understood to want an additional £4.1m in compensation
Manchester United’s pursuit of Ruben Amorim is being held up over the compensation fee Sporting Lisbon want for his coaching staff.
Amorim has agreed to succeed Erik ten Hag at United, who have agreed to pay Sporting the 39-year-old coach’s £8.3million release clause. But Sporting are understood to want an additional £4.1m in compensation for Amorim’s backroom team, who will join him in making the switch to Old Trafford.
Amorim is determined to bring his trusted trio of right-hand man Carlos Fernandes, first-team coach Adelio Candido and goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital with him to United. With Amorim’s release clause considered low for Europe’s elite clubs, Sporting are determined to hold out for as much as they can for his assistants, which is why the deal for him is delayed.
United are keen to finalise a deal with Sporting for Amorim and his assistants within the next 48 hours, with the hope he can watch Sunday’s game against Chelsea at Old Trafford, before officially taking over next week.
Amorim is set to treble his current £2m-a-year salary with the move to United, who are understood to have offered him a three-year contract, with the option of an extra year.
Under the terms of his contract with Sporting, Amorim has a 30-day notice period, but United want him in position as quickly as possible, which is why the Portuguese club are trying to squeeze as much compensation as they can for his backroom team.
If Sporting play hardball in terms of their compensation request for Amorim’s coaches, it could leave United’s managerial target in the farcical situation of continuing to take charge of the Portuguese champions, despite wanting to leave for the Premier League.
Amorim will speak at a media conference on Thursday, ahead of Sporting’s league clash with Estrela at Estadio Jose Alvalade tomorrow, when his team will look to maintain their 100 per cent start to the new league campaign with a 10th straight win.
