Man Utd hold talks with players over Ruben Amorim’s future – with clear decision reached

Manchester United bosses have held talks with Bruno Fernandes and other leading players to assess the mood within the squad as pressure continues to mount on Ruben Amorim

07:57, 08 Oct 2025Updated 07:57, 08 Oct 2025

Senior figures at Manchester United have held talks with some players to gauge the mood over Ruben Amorim and the current state of affairs – with the overriding feeling being that they remain behind him.

Amorim secured a much needed win at the weekend, beating Sunderland at Old Trafford, but the Portuguese boss has still not secured back-to-back victories during his 50 Premier League games in charge, underlining how difficult his tenure has been.

His long-term future in Manchester continues to be a talking point, especially with the coach so wedded to his philosophy, which has failed to result in an upturn in form. ESPN reports that CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have spoken to members of the squad – including captain Bruno Fernandes as well as the leadership group – and they believe support still exists for Amorim.

Conversations were not formal and the individuals were not deliberately ‘sounded out’ ahead of a decision on Amorim, who has a contract with the club until 2027 and is only just about to mark 12 months in the job.

Mason Mount has said that the dressing room is “100% behind the gaffer” despite the early struggles. Defender Matthijs de Ligt also publicly backed Amorim following the 3-1 defeat at Brentford less than a fortnight ago.

Any decision to sack Amorim would involve Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer. Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox would also be asked for their input having been hands-on in the decisions that have been taken by the club. They have been active in trying to understand what the mood is at the club.

Both men are based at the Carrington training base and that has given them a greater insight. It has also allowed them to have constant communication with Amorim and the squad, owing to the communal areas in the new training centre.

The United boss has continued to cut a defiant figure when questioned about his future – and has maintained that his playing style is not the reasons for their struggles.

He said: “You fear to lose your job when you have to pay the bills and I don’t have that feeling. I just want to continue this. But when we don’t win games, that is the suffering that I have. It is not the fear of losing the job. I don’t care.

Amorim also added: “I think we are thinking about the system but I think we need to look at all of the parts of the game. This team play in the different systems for many years, and you were talking about the lack of identity, no idea, whatever.”
