Late efforts from Manchester United to add to the signings of Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven ended up failing to bear fruit, leaving Ruben Amorim with limited options
Manchester United will go into the remainder of the season without any deadline day signings to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad, capping off an underwhelming transfer window.
Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven were presented in front of United’s supporters ahead of Sunday’s defeat to Crystal Palace, but the double swoop wasn’t followed by a new forward. Amorim was able to hold onto Alejandro Garnacho, but exits for Marcus Rashford and Antony mean options are fairly limited.
Amorim has an FA Cup fourth round tie with Leicester up ahead, with victory feeling like a must. With United languishing in the bottom half of the table, a cup victory – be that domestic or European – looks like their best chance of securing European football for the head coach’s first full season.
Before then, though, the Red Devils have to face the fallout from a winter window which flattered to deceive. Here are Mirror Football‘s latest lines from around Old Trafford.
Why Tel move failed
Manchester United’s negotiations over Mathys Tel were held up over a £5million loan fee, it has been claimed. According to The Athletic, that fee – in combination with a failure to secure a buy option for the Bayern Munich star – ensured talks collapsed on Sunday.
United were in for embarrassment, then, when Tottenham succeeded where they failed. Spurs convinced Tel to join on loan on deadline day, and the London side can sign Tel permanently for the best part of £50m in the summer.
Tel was one of two late loan arrivals for Spurs, following on from Austrian defender Kevin Danso. United’ in contrast, had nothing to show for their deadline day efforts.
Double exit confirmed
United got a pair of deals announced after the transfer window shut, but they were exits rather than arrivals. Sam Mather and Louis Jackson were the pair to depart, with both sent out on loan to Tranmere Rovers.

“We are delighted to sign a pair of young, talented players from a Premier League club, which gives us greater strength in depth for the second half of the season,” Tranmere boss Nigel Adkins said. “I look forward to working with them both.”
Tranmere finished 16th in League Two last season but are hovering just above the relegation zone this term. The double swoop sees the pair join Blackburn midfielder Jake Garrett, who joined on loan at the end of January.
Rooney gives Rashford verdict
Marcus Rashford’s former Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney wasn’t surprised to see the forward complete a loan exit. England international Rashford will spend the remainder of the season with Aston Villa, having confirmed his move on Sunday.
“I was surprised when this started over two years ago, but now I’m not,” Rooney said on the Stick to Football podcast. I’ve spoken to Marcus a couple of times and I’ve given him my thoughts and feelings that he needs to leave the club, because whatever is going on his life and at United, he’s not the same.
“For him to have a fresh start, he needs to leave the club. The fact that your manager is coming out and saying that you’re not training right is crazy.”
