Man Utd news: Ruben Amorim’s £50m problem and ‘stupid’ Jose Mourinho comment goes viral

By staff16 September 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Manchester United suffered yet another defeat as they were beaten by Manchester City on derby day, and Ruben Amorim’s £50million headache has been compounded by an indirect Jose Mourinho jab

Manchester United’s dismal run continues after defeat to Manchester City on derby day. And Ruben Amorim has been told that he and some of his players simply can’t cut it.

Pep Guardiola’s City put their rivals to the sword 3-0 on Sunday thanks to a Phil Foden header and an Erling Haaland double. The Red Devils have now only won one game this season and sit 14th in the Premier League as pressure continues to mount on head coach Amorim.

In the wake of the loss, United legend Gary Neville took aim at one player in particular. Comments made by Jose Mourinho this summer rang relevant after Amorim’s post-match admissions too, as Mirror Football brings you all the latest updates from Old Trafford.

Gary Neville slams £50m midfielder

In United’s defeat, Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte failed to make any impact and was substituted after 80 minutes with his side’s fate sealed. The 24-year-old arrived from PSG last summer for a fee that could rise to £50million with add-ons included.

Speaking after the loss, Neville took aim at United’s midfielders and claimed that Ugarte, in particular, is not good enough to play for the club despite his sizable transfer sum.

“The midfield is a massive problem, and we’ve known that. United fans know that,” said the ex-Red Devils right-back, speaking on his Gary Neville Podcast.

“Ugarte and Fernandes today, I think you mentioned it early, about an hour before the game, that Ugarte and Fernandes played in this fixture last year from start to finish, and United won the game, but Ugarte is not good enough.”

Jose Mourinho’s ‘stupid’ comment

In his post-match press conference, Amorim was rather bullish when asked why he has yet to adapt his playing style despite the club’s evidently lacking results. Comments made by ex-United boss Mourinho earlier this summer have now resurfaced, with the Portuguese manager blasting any other head coach who refuses to change.

“There are coaches who try things that don’t work and fail, but they say, ‘I died with my idea.’ If you die with your idea, you’re stupid. Coaches have to adapt their ideas to what they have,” said Mourinho.

Amorim’s press conference admission perhaps falls under Mourinho’s viral comment, as he said: “I won’t change my philosophy. If they (the United hierarchy) want it changed, you change the man. I am not going to change my philosophy. I will play my way until I want to change.

“Guys, I understand [the questions] and I accept it is not a record you should have at Man United. But there are a lot of things that you have no idea about what happen in the last months.”

Roy Keane blasts Luke Shaw

Amorim and Ugarte are not the only ones who caught some flak after the result against City. On Sky Sports, former United midfielder Roy Keane singled out left-back Luke Shaw for his performance after the Englishman was somewhat responsible for Foden’s opener.

“United are throwing money and if these are brilliant coaches, you are going, ‘When are you going to coach these players to make them better?’ Because some of the decision-making, it’s just all wrong,” stated Keane.

“Shaw for the first goal, so Shaw is an international footballer. For him to get caught out like that. I think Shaw has been getting away with murder for years at United. Always injured, never quite fit.

“We make excuses and then he gets a few games under his belt and then he’s making decisions like he doesn’t even want to tackle people.”
