Man visits Tesco and can’t get over price of two sirloin steaks

By staff21 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

As the cost and living crisis continues, many shoppers are feeling the pinch especially when it comes to food and drink. Reports suggest the annual rate of food price inflation has shot up to 4.5%

A man ventured into Tesco and was stunned after spotting a two-pack of the supermarket’s ‘Finest’ sirloin steaks being sold for a much higher price than he expected. The cost of living crisis continues to affect shoppers up and down the country, with food and drink a particular bone of contention for many.

There’s been reported increases on a plethora of household essentials and cupboard fillers, with the Economics Observatory stating: “The annual rate of food price inflation in the UK has accelerated to 4.5%”. Unsurprisingly, more and more people are taking note of prices when doing their shopping.

One man went into Tesco and was caught off guard by the price of its Tesco Finest Sirloin Steaks, which are being sold at £15.25 for a 454g pack of two steaks. He shared a picture of the price tag on the shelf of the popular supermarket and shared it on social media.

On Reddit, he asked: “Is this insane or am I out of touch? £15.25 for a sirloin? That’s just insane,” going on to claim: “They [used] to be about 7 quid not [too] long ago.”

According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), fluctuating prices on meat are normal.

It states: “Around the world farmgate cattle prices vary, affected by various factors, most obviously supply and demand.

“Some of these factors are more local in nature, and might include logistical and supply chain issues, such as transportation costs between farm, abattoir, cutting plant and dispatch location, or problems with processing capacity.”

Beneath the man’s claims on Reddit, fellow shoppers were keen to share their thoughts.

One person said: “Ah, it’s hit Tesco too. I was baffled when I saw steak prices in Sainsbury’s last week. They’ve rocketed overnight.”

Another said: “If I’m paying that much for a steak from a supermarket I’m gonna go M&S.”

Offering a different perspective, someone else commented: “As someone who works in a catering butchers, you would not believe how expensive beef has gotten recently, it’s absolutely insane”.

A fourth person commented: “If you look at the price per kg then it’s about the same as what it is in other supermarkets.”

A fifth agreed: “That’s a big steak, probably serves two unless you’ve got a huge appetite, it’s 30 day a dry aged and a decent cut. It’s too expensive for me and I wouldn’t buy it, but it’s not out of step with the cost of beef steak these days. Meat is expensive.”

Another said: “Brother. That’s a 16oz Tesco Finest, it’s gonna be expensive. Just go to the butcher instead”.

Someone else claimed: “Pretty much everything that could be considered a source of protein has increased massively, meat, fish, cheese and eggs.”

Many suggested visiting a local butcher instead. One person shared: “Isn’t the butcher even more expensive though?

“I once bought a few lamb chops from the butcher and practically passed out when I heard the price! Thought he’d added an extra 0 for a laugh!!”

Tesco has been approached for comment.
