There’s nothing worse than yellow stains on your bed linen – but an expert explains why your pillow could be turning the same hue and shares a free way to solve the issue

We often grumble about the unsightly yellow stains on pillowcases that seem impervious to cleaning – a common and troubling issue.

But worry no more, as one bedding expert is offering valuable advice on how to conquer this domestic challenge. Meanwhile, confusion and debate have erupted among social media users following one man’s admission of his affection for his stained pillow.

Cam Thomson provoked a stir online when he posted an image of his discoloured and misshapen pillow on X. Accompanying his picture, Cam made the controversial statement: “Girlfriend is mad at me because I have revealed to her The Yellow Pillow. Fellas, I’m sure you all know that this thing is magic.”

While his choice has been met with dismay from his partner, Thomson ardently justifies his attachment to the time-worn pillow over getting a new one. His post didn’t take long to become viral, stirring up widespread engagement as people hotly discussed the merits of Cam’s prized pillow against his girlfriend’s sentiments.

Fabio Perrotta, director of buying at Dreams, has weighed in on the heated debate about why pillows turn yellow, focusing on when they should be binned or washed. The expert noted: “The debate surrounding yellowing pillows is a hot topic, and it’s important to consider both comfort and hygiene in this discussion. Pillows should ideally be replaced, or thoroughly cleaned, when they no longer provide the necessary support for a restful night’s sleep.”

He explained that: “Yellowing of pillows can be attributed to several factors, including the accumulation of sweat, body oils, and dust mites. Interestingly, there are some other reasons why pillows may yellow, and men may be more susceptible due to their habits.”

Going into detail, he said: “For instance, men’s grooming products, such as hair wax or styling products, can transfer onto pillows, leading to discoloration. Additionally, hormonal differences may play a role; variations in sweat and skin oil composition can affect the rate of staining.

“Men also typically have facial hair, which can trap oils and other substances, potentially leading to more transfer onto the pillowcase.” Fortunately, there’s a cost-free solution to the problem – and it’s as straightforward as leaving your pillow in the sunlight. Fabio advised: “But there are many ways to prevent or tackle this issue.

“Some of my favourites include, placing your pillow in the sun for a few hours, which can help naturally bleach and freshen it, or using lemon juice or baking soda to scrub away stains. Also, be sure to always read the cleaning instructions on your individual pillow.”
