Manchester United are set to make some major changes this summer, with Ruben Amorim looking to ship out a number of players and bring in some fresh faces to revamp his squad
Manchester United are set for a huge summer in the transfer window as Ruben Amorim looks to overhaul his underperforming squad. United currently sit 14th in the Premier League and will need to make some major signings this summer.
Mirror Football understands that United believe they can raise around £200million by cashing in on current first-team players, as well as saving up to £80m-a-year on wages. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia are all currently out on loan, but are expected to be sold.
They are also open to selling Andre Onana, Casemiro and Alejandro Garnacho, while they could cash in on Kobbie Mainoo amid a contract stand-off. Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton are also expected to leave when their deals expire at the end of the season, although Evans and Heaton could move into coaching roles.
That will give Amorim some money to spend on new recruits, with United’s chief executive Omar Berrada confirming last month that they will back the manager in the transfer market. “We’re making some big efforts to get us in the best financial position. Even if we’re outside of Europe – I think we will be in a position to invest in the squad,” Berrada told TNT Sports.
So, how might United find themselves lining up next season if all goes to plan over the summer? Here, Mirror Football takes a closer look at some of those being linked.
Goalkeeper and defence
Andre Onana was recently dropped after making a string of mistakes, while deputy Altay Bayindir also made an error in United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday. As a result, the Red Devils are expected to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and the Sun are reporting that they are interested in Aaron Ramsdale.
Ramsdale has just been relegated with Southampton and the ex-Arsenal stopper would surely jump at the chance to return to the top flight. Amorim is expected to stick with his back five system and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is reportedly among United’s top targets.
Branthwaite could slot in alongside Leny Yoro and Matthijs De Ligt, while Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven provide cover. January signing Patrick Dorgu will likely continue as Amorim’s first-choice left wing-back, with Noussair Mazraoui on the right and Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw providing cover.
Midfield
Bruno Fernandes has been United’s best player once again this season and he has impressed in a slightly deeper role at times, meaning he could line up alongside Manuel Ugarte in the heart of midfield.
Amad was also enjoying an impressive campaign under Amorim until he suffered an ankle injury in February and the 22-year-old is expected to slot straight back into the starting lineup as soon as he is fully fit.
Wolves star Matheus Cunha looks set to leave in the summer and United are interested in signing him to fill the other No.10 role. Cunha is a proven Premier League player who has netted 14 goals for Wolves this season and the Brazilian has a reported £62.5m release clause.
Attack
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have simply not been good enough for United this season, with the two strikers managing just six league goals between them. As a result, the Red Devils have been linked with a number of potential replacements.
Liam Delap is said to be among their targets after his impressive breakout season at Ipswich. The 22-year-old has scored 12 league goals in a side that is set to be relegated back down to the Championship.
Delap is said to have a clause in his contract that will make him available for £30m once Ipswich are relegated, but United are set to face plenty of competition from the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle.
Potential Man Utd XI: Ramsdale; Yoro, De Ligt, Branthwaite; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu; Amad, Cunha; Delap
