Erik ten Hag’s future has come under question at Manchester United with the Dutchman fighting for his job at Old Trafford but it appears he still has the support of the dressing room
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag still has the support of his dressing room.
Defeat on an embarrassing afternoon against Tottenham has seen the Red Devils sit in 13th with just two wins in the Premier League thus far. Speculation over Ten Hag’s future has quickly followed after the Dutchman’s position was considered closely following the end of last season.
The club have already slipped up in the opening Europa League effort against FC Twente and now travel to Porto in search of victory. The clash is said to be one of two that the ex-Ajax coach has to secure his job and the likes of Simone Inzaghi and Gareth Southgate are said to be under consideration.
The Telegraph report that United’s players believe they can turn around their form and they back their manager to lead that and address the issues present. That Ten Hag has a history of lifting trophies with his players at United, or with those he has previously coached at Ajax appears to have been helpful.
The United boss also has confidence in his team. The 54-year-old believes his squad has the required talent to turn its fortunes around and he is not flustered about the current situation.
“Nothing is easy, but this is nothing for me to panic about, because I experienced it so often with my teams during seasons, that you are facing these problems,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports. “So we can sort them out. This team can sort this out.”
“The most important [issue] to address is one you always need, to keep the belief,” he added. “[To] stay in the game, you need to keep the belief so that’s the most important message that we have to give because if you lose your faith you lose everything isn’t it? We have to keep going and stick to the plan and move on.”
Ten Hag also acknowledged his is in regular contact with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The club saw turnover on and off the pitch over the summer and the former central defender wants to direct that into finding wins.
“We’re talking continually, but we are talking about how we can improve the process. We are all very impatient and our fans are and they are entitled to but we are definitely as well. We want to win every game and when we are losing, everyone is disappointed, frustrated but it’s also our fuel to get better.
