Electric vehicle owners in some parts of the country have to battle for access to public chargers with around 30 other drivers. It comes as Keir Starmer is set to reinstate the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.

There were a total of 193,098 public electric vehicle charging points across the UK in January, according to figures from the Department of Transport. Those are shared by around 460,000 privately owned electric vehicles across the country. It works out as 2.4 vehicles for every public charger.

But some parts of the country have far less public charging infrastructure than others. There are just 49 public electric vehicle charging points in the whole of the East Hampshire local authority. Those are shared between 1,639 privately owned electric vehicles registered in the area.

That works out as 33 vehicles per charging point, which is a higher rate than in any local authority in the UK. Meanwhile, Melton in Leicestershire has just 16 public charging points for its 457 electric vehicles. That works out as 29 per charging point.

North Kesteven (34 charging points) and St Albans (73 charging points) also have 29 for every privately owned electric vehicle registered in the area. Fenland has 28 electric cars per charging point, while Harrow, Tandridge and East Renfrewshire each have 27 per charging point. You can see how many charging points and electric cars are in your area by using our interactive map above.

London has the most electric car friendly infrastructure in the country. Three of the capital’s boroughs have more than one public charging point for every electric car registered there. Hammersmith and Fulham has more public electric charging points than any local authority in the UK – 2,668.

The DVLA’s new car regulations will lead to some drivers paying significantly more each year, depending on the vehicle. Ths includes a new standard road tax rate, fresh taxes for electric vehicles (EVs), increased levies for low-emission vehicles and a doubling of first-year rates for high-polluting new cars.

We Buy Any Car’s free car valuation allows you to find out exactly how much your car is worth in less than 30 seconds.

With 1,470 privately owned electric vehicles registered in the borough that works out at 0.6 cars per charger, the joint lowest rate in the country. Meanwhile Southwark has 0.8 cars per charger, as does Hackney. Coventry is the most electric car friendly council outside of the capital.

The city’s 2,272 public charging points are shared between 1,252 privately owned electric vehicles. That works out as 0.6 cars per charger, the joint lowest rate in the country.
