Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United under new head coach Ruben Amorim remains incredibly uncertain, but one former player has urged him to bury the hatchet and stay put at Old Trafford
Teddy Sheringham says that Marcus Rashford should apologise for saying he wants a “new challenge” away from Manchester United.
The 27-year-old, who has spent the entirety of his career with the Red Devils, has fallen out of favour under new head coach Ruben Amorim. He was ultimately left out of United’s fierce derby with Manchester City, which they went on to win 2-1 courtesy of goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.
In the days that followed, Rashford told reporter Henry Winter: “For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps. When I leave it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings’. You’re not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That’s me as a person. If I know that a situation is already bad I’m not going to make it worse. I’ve seen how other players have left in the past and I don’t want to be that person. When I leave I’ll make a statement and it will be from me.”
While the forward has been linked with a number of clubs as his potential next destination, including Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and West Ham, Sheringham would prefer it if Rashford apologised for his comments and tried to work his way back into the fold at United.
Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds, Sheringham said: “I think Ruben Amorim has dealt with Marcus Rashford exactly how he feels right. He’s the manager. If someone starts talking like that, obviously his mind is not firmly on the game and if it’s not firmly on the game, he’s not going to produce his best football.
“He’s given him a bit of time out and hopefully Rashford will understand that he’s done the wrong thing by saying those sorts of things to the press and apologises for what he’s done. Hopefully he gets his head straight and says that he wants to get back and play for United.”
Following his comments, Rashford was missing from United’s EFL Cup quarter final exit at Spurs, as well as damaging Premier League losses against Bournemouth and Wolves, before returning to the bench for the Red Devils’ defeat to Newcastle United on December 30. He was also missing from Manchester United’s showdown with Liverpool, which resulted in a promising 2-2 draw for Amorim’s side – albeit Amorim cited illness as the reason for Rashford’s absence.
Despite a relationship seemingly dwindling between Rashford and his boss at present, the England star currently sits as United’s joint-top scorer alongside Fernandes – with four goals to his name from 15 games this season. Should Rashford find a new club over the course of the January transfer window, Amorim may look to enlist the help of a proven goalscorer on either a permanent or temporary basis.
The Red Devils have recently been linked with the likes of Victor Osimhen, who is currently enjoying a loan spell with Galatasaray from his parent club Napoli, PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani, and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres – who has previously worked alongside Amorim in Portugal but looks likely to remain there until the summer.
