Marcus Rashford told not to rewrite history – Manchester United exit is HIS fault

By staff18 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney reckons Barcelona loanee Marcus Rashford needs to look at himself to discover reasons why his Manchester United career ended in such acrimony

Wayne Rooney reckons Marcus Rashford only has himself to blame for seeing his Manchester United career end in tears. Rashford left United in the summer to join Barcelona on a season-long loan. The Spanish giants have the option to make the move permanent in a £26m deal.

Rashford is said to be loving life in Barcelona and has no intention of returning to United. The England striker had a huge bust-up with Ruben Amorim, after revealing in an unsanctioned interview how he wanted to leave United.

He joined Aston Villa on-loan for the second half of last season and was banned from joining the United squad for pre-season training in the summer. Rashford claims finding himself in an inconsistent environment at United was the root cause for him wanting out. But former England and United captain Rooney has told Rashford he should look at himself when it comes to finding reasons for the breakdown in his relationship with his hometown club.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, he questioned the striker’s attitude. He said: “I think the environment hasn’t been right, but that is down to yourself.

“If you are not playing well or you get left out of the team then I think it is easier to blame the environment and whether that is right or wrong.

“I think that comes from how you apply yourself. In games, we have seen with him where we know he can do more, we know he can run more – that is nothing to do with an environment.

“I might be wrong here, I really like Marcus as a lad and as a person, but I think that is an easy one to throw at people.”

Since joining Barca, Rashford has rediscovered some of his best form and won back his place in the England squad. He is expected to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s final squad for next summer’s World Cup.
