High street legend Marks and Spencer’s newest supersized release has shoppers racing to stores to try it for themselves – but some are disappointed it’s missing one major thing
Marks and Spencer shoppers are eager to track down a new, “giant” version of the classic British biscuits, custard creams and bourbons.
The phenomenally popular retailer is an icon on the high street, maintaining an impressive fan base and legacy to this day, after originating back in 1884.
Marks and Spencer is known for offering high quality products across a range of departments, including on-trend clothing, homeware and furniture. In its beloved Food Halls, shoppers can peruse a range of in-house food, drinks and more.
New food releases often cause a stir, with shoppers keen to get their hands on its latest offerings.
Like many brands, M&S utilises social media to connect with customers, with regular photo and video uploads posted online to keep them in the loop on all the latest product arrivals.
The retailer has amassed a loyal following online, making use of multiple Instagram accounts each devoted to its individual departments.
Recently, a photo of its Giant Custard Creams and Giant Bourbon biscuits was shared via its main Instagram account and its food-focused page.
The sweet treats offer sweet lovers a supersized version of the classic treat – but with a twist. They don’t include a filling. On the packaging, their usage is clarified by the line “makes four ice cream sandwiches”.
The product description on the M&S website states: “Your favourite biscuit has been reimagined with our Giant Custard Creams. Layer ice cream in the middle to instantly create a classic ice cream sandwich.”
In the caption accompanying the images shared on social media, the retailer penned: “New in the M&S Foodhall BIG biscuit breaking news!
“You LOVED our chocolate-coated custard creams and bourbons last year, and went wild when we added extra cream filling to our regular biccies… Now say hello to our Giant Custard Creams and Bourbon Biscuits!!
“Our experts have worked hard with our bakers to ensure these tremendous treats taste exactly the same as their regular-sized versions, just bigger!”
It advises using them to make ice cream sandwiches or as a topping on a sundae. In the comments section, people shared their thoughts.
One Instagram user said: “Cannot wait to make ice cream sandwiches with these and then drizzle on a bit of the new chocolate sauce too!!”
Another said: “ON MY WAY OMFG” while a third commented: “I love these!!! They are so inspiring a cake design idea”.
But some shoppers are disappointed by the lack of filling. A review of the Giant Bourbon biscuits posted on shopping site Ocado reads: “The packaging suggests it is an entire bourbon biscuit, however they are not.
“This could be made much clearer. They also taste somewhat stale. Disappointed. I should have read the description more carefully, but even still, I would not recommend!”
Another reviewer, who made a similar assumption, said they “didn’t read the details” and added: “My fault. Thought these were giant bourbon biscuits but there is no filling”.
You can find your nearest M&S store here. Alternatively, you can purchase M&S’s Giant Custard Cream biscuits via Ocado, as well as its Giant Bourbon biscuits. Both are priced at £3 for a 240g box. They’re designed to be used to make ice cream sandwiches.
