Sunday has arrived once more, and plenty of us will be organising get-togethers with friends and family for dinner. And if you’ve been landed with bringing pudding, there’s one dessert that never fails to deliver – a proper apple crumble.

The rich, crumbly layer on top complements the sharpness of the fruit beneath so perfectly. Served piping hot alongside custard or cream, it’s guaranteed to please everyone at the table.

It’s straightforward to prepare as well – according to baking legend Mary Berry, you can whip up this pudding using only six ingredients, reports the Express.

This simple recipe, which feeds six people, is a timeless favourite for good reason. Cosy and satisfying, it’s ideal for a post-dinner indulgence during these chilly and dark nights.

The sugary, buttery layer makes it feel wonderfully decadent, whilst the tartness of the apples balances everything perfectly.

Fans have been thoroughly wowed by this recipe, awarding it an impressive average of 4.9 stars out of five on the Happy Foodie website.

Raving about how good it tastes, one reviewer commented: “Everyone tucked in. Not a crumb left over. Delicious!”

Someone else posted: “Turned out fantastic, my husband said it’s the best he’s ever tasted.”

Here’s how you can recreate it in your own kitchen.

Mary Berry’s apple crumble

Ingredients

  • 1.5kg cooking apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped
  • 30g butter
  • 175g light muscovado sugar

For the crumble topping

  • 175g plain flour
  • 115g butter, cut into cubes
  • 55g demerara sugar, plus extra for sprinkling

Method

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6. Start by placing the apples in a large pan, adding two tablespoons of water and the butter.

Gently cook this for about six minutes, stirring regularly until the apples are tender. Remove from heat, stir in the sugar and let it cool.

In the meantime, prepare the crumble topping by measuring the ingredients into a large bowl. Use your fingers to rub them together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Next, spoon the cooled apple mixture into the pie dish and smooth the surface with a spatula. Sprinkle an even layer of the crumble topping over the apple, then add a bit more demerara sugar for good measure.

Pop it in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Then lower the temperature to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4 and bake for another 20 minutes until it’s golden and bubbling.

Serve piping hot with cream, custard, ice cream or crème fraîche.
