Matheus Cunha’s decision to sign a new deal at Wolves was a surprise given the huge interest in the Brazilian, but now details of his release clause at Molineux have come to light
Wolves forward Matheus Cunha now has a release clause of £62million after agreeing a new deal at Molineux, according to reports.
Cunha was one of the most sought-after players in the January transfer window and the likes of Arsenal were strongly linked with a move for the in-form Brazilian.
The 25-year-old has turned heads after netting 11 times in the Premier League to boost their survival hopes, while also providing four assists.
It came as a surprise when news dropped he had committed to a new four-and-a-half-year deal with Vitor Pereira’s team, but now the terms of his contract have been revealed.
According to the Daily Mail, interested clubs have been put on red alert after the release clause, which becomes valid this summer, came to light.
There are no restrictions on which clubs are allowed to activate the release clause, meaning a club like Arsenal or Liverpool could swoop for Cunha this summer. It goes on to say that Tottenham, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are among the interested parties.
Arsenal’s need for a new goalscorer has been evident in recent months, though they failed to bring in a new forward in January and could be interested at the end of the season, while Liverpool are preparing for life without Mo Salah as things stand.
Despite speculation continuing that Cunha could leave, Wolves chief Jeff Shi was upbeat after announcing his new deal, saying it was a reward for his excellent displays and called him “leader of the group”.
“Matheus has been on an amazing journey with us over the past two years and it’s been a privilege to see him grow into a big part of the Wolves family.
“Matheus has a good relationship with everyone at Compton Park, his personality is infectious to those around him, and we hope this new contract will provide a boost to the group.
“We can all see his quality on the pitch, but off it he’s developed into a leader of the group, and we’re delighted that he’s signed a new contract. It’s always important to us that we reward our strongest and most impactful players, and Matheus deserves this new deal.”
