McDonald’s fans vow to ‘never’ order again after finding out how onions are prepped

Devotees of the iconic Big Mac are swearing off the McDonald’s classic for good after a viral TikTok revealed the surprising method behind its onions.

Big Mac enthusiasts who relish the crunch of fresh onions in their burgers might be taken aback by a revelation from an ex-McDonald’s employee. According to this former staffer, the fast-food giant has been sticking to this particular onion prep routine “for at least 40 years”.

Down Under, an ex-employee named Huseyin spilled the beans on the onion process during his tenure at a McDonald’s outlet. On TikTok, he demonstrated that dehydrated onions are dumped into a container and then completely submerged in ice water.

As Huseyin narrates to his hefty following of 800,000, viewers can see him pouring the onions into a vessel, followed by a cascade of ice and water. The resulting mush is stirred up and then stashed away in the fridge.

The video sparked a flurry of comments, with many expressing shock over the revelation. One viewer declared: “I’m never having Maccies again”, while another resolved: “OK, never again.”

A third lamented: “I am never ordering extra onions in my Big Mac anymore,”. A fellow ex-McDonald’s worker chimed in, confirming: “They’ve been making the onions like this for at least 40 years. I used to work at McDonalds.”

Meanwhile, another past employee reminisced: “Wow that’s changed. What happened to the bucket with water down the bottom and the removal insert?”.

“I just started working at Maccies and I’m in for a shock,” one new employee shared. Another, claiming to be a seasoned McDonald’s staff member, divulged: “I work at Maccies, the onions have to be cold otherwise they’ll go pink.”

Echoing the sentiment, another confirmed: “I work at Maccies and can 100% confirm this.”

Despite these behind-the-scenes insights, many fans remain undeterred from enjoying their beloved McDonald’s favourites. “I would still eat it,” one enthusiast declared. “Tastes so good,” chimed in another, with a third concurring: “Still tastes good,”.

McDonald’s made headlines at in 2023 when it announced an upcoming revamp of its legendary Big Mac burger. The overhaul encompasses everything from the cooking process to ingredient preparation before assembly.

This move is seen as a bid to stay competitive in the increasingly popular gourmet burger sector.

In their latest spring advertising blitz, the fast-food giant is touting what it calls the “best burgers ever,” aiming to deliver juicier patties through more than 50 tweaks. Chris Young, McDonald’s senior director of global menu strategy, stated that the changes are focused on enhancing taste and quality.

The chain is also resurrecting its adult happy meals, initially launched last year, complete with a nostalgic twist: a contemporary version of the cherished McNugget Buddies toys that delighted children of the ’80s and ’90s.

The Mirror reached out to McDonald’s for a statement.
