Tom Fletcher revealed on Monday that he had been rushed to an eye hospital after suffering from a nasty uveitis flare up which left him looking as though he’d been ‘smashed in the face’
McFly singer Tom Fletcher has announced he was rushed to hospital earlier this week. The musician took to social media to explain that he was suffering from a flare up due to an autoimmune condition that he battles. Tom suffers from uveitis which causes inflammation inside a part of the eye.
The condition should be treated as soon as possible when symptoms appear. Symptoms of the condition include sensitivity to light, blurred vision and pain. Meanwhile, people can also suffer from loss of vision and even blindness. The NHS states that the condition often gets better quickly if treated but can come back at any time.
Depending on the severity of the condition ,a GP can often refer a patient to an eye specialist known as an (ophthalmologist) and will be seen within 24 hours to start the appropriate treatment. These include medications to reduce the immune system surrounding the eye, light treatment, temporarily freezing part of the eye or surgery on the eye.
In Tom’s social media post, one side of his face could be seen drooping due to the inflammation surrounding his eye.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, he said: “My autoimmune thing flared up out of nowhere last night (Sunday). Woke up feeling (and looking) like I’d been smashed in the fact! This is after it had calmed down and I could see again.” He explained: “Not the day I had planned” and said he was on medication for six weeks.
The star, 39, who lives in Richmond, London, with his wife and three children went to the Accident and Emergency department at The Western Eye Hospital to receive treatment. He told fans: “Hate having to come here but so thankful it exists! The doctors and nurses have helped me out so many times now.”
Now, Tom has to take eye drops every day for six weeks in an attempt to tackle the flare up. He last shared an update on his condition in 2023, just months after he was rushed to hospital due to similar symptoms. Speaking in 2023, Tom said: “Sorry I’ve been quiet for a bit. I was wiped out with some sort of illness and in bed for a few days. I just got back on my feet yesterday and uveitis decided to kick me down again.”
In recent weeks, Tom has been keeping a low profile after he was said to have been “humiliated” after being caught in the drama surrounding his bandmate, Danny Jones, who was spotted kissing his I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! co-star Maura Higgins at a BRIT Awards afterparty last month.
Tom attended a swanky party with Danny after the glitzy awards on March 1, just hours before Danny and Maura planted kisses on one another – despite Jones being married and having a child. Speaking to The Sun, a source said: “Tom is by no means a party animal – in fact he made it quite clear the afterparty was not on his mind, but Danny had other ideas.
“Tom wasn’t there when the pair were seen getting close, but feels he is still associated with what went on. He doesn’t even know Maura, he doesn’t follow her or any other Love Island stars – he just doesn’t really mix in those circles.”
Danny and his wife Georgia have been married since 2014. She even moved the family into their new home last year while Danny was tied up with work.
The mum-of-one ultimately needed to take time for herself in January as she booked herself into a solo countryside retreat to have a detox from the stresses of life. The mum-of-one revealed how she felt burnt out after solo parenting for a month while Danny was in the jungle last year.
