Graydon Carter, former Vanity Fair editor, has criticized Meghan Markle for being “adrift on the facts and reality” following her Netflix series titled With Love, Meghan
Veteran journalist Graydon Carter has taken aim at Meghan Markle, claiming she is “slightly adrift on the facts and reality.” The former Vanity Fair editor, who led the magazine for 25 years, shared his experience working with the Duchess of Sussex when she appeared on the cover of an October 2017 issue – before she married Prince Harry.
Carter admitted that, at the time, he “had no idea” who Meghan was, but was convinced to feature her after being told, “She’s going to marry Prince Harry.” However, Meghan was reportedly unhappy with the angle of the interview, expecting the focus to be on her philanthropy rather than her royal relationship.
According to Carter, she reacted with surprise when asked about Harry, allegedly responding: “Excuse me, is this going to all be about Prince Harry? Because I thought we were going to be talking about my charities and my philanthropy.”
Reflecting on the fallout between Prince Harry and his family, Carter suggested that Princess Diana “would feel great sorrow” over the rift, particularly between her two sons. “Anytime someone comes between siblings, that’s a disaster – horrible for a family,” he added.
Carter has previously criticised Meghan and has even speculated about the future of her marriage to Harry. In 2023, he predicted their relationship would last “years rather than decades,” suggesting she had “run rings around poor Harry” to achieve “notoriety, money, and a title.” He also quipped that while he didn’t see an acting comeback in her future, “If there is a Real Housewives of Montecito show in the works, she’d be a shoo-in.”
It comes as Meghan appears to have fired back at Gwyneth Paltrow in what some are calling a breakfast war, following Paltrow’s recent Instagram post that fans are speculating subtly poked fun at the Duchess of Sussex.
Gwyneth – founder of the wellness brand Goop – had filmed herself making breakfast in the kitchen of her home. And many of her followers believe she was subtly throwing shade at the Duchess and her Netflix lifestyle series, which has been savaged by critics.
In her video, Gwyneth could be seen making bacon, eggs and buttermilk biscuits, appearing bare-faced and in her pyjamas. The clip starts with the actress taking a sip out of her coffee mug while looking directly into the camera. She then puts a pan of biscuits in the oven before doing a high kick and kissing her dog.
The video concluded with the mum of two showing off her full meal, which consisted of biscuits, eggs, bacon and jam. “My cleaner take on a classic breakfast: gluten-free buttermilk biscuits, not-so-perfectly cooked over-easy eggs, and crispy bacon #boyfriendbreakfast,” she captioned the post.
In contrast, polished Meghan wore full makeup, with perfectly styled hair, in her show, complete with a designer wardrobe. She also chose not to film at her own home, instead hiring a nearby farmhouse worth £6.2million.
Fans further noted that Gwyneth used the soundtrack This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole, which was also used in promos for Meghan’s Netflix project.
It didn’t take long for people to share their thoughts online. “And being as relatable as she can be, in her PJs, hair not styled, no make-up, sipping coffee. No one praising her. Just her phone filming. Simple and easy,” one wrote.
A second said: “Gwyneth Paltrow continues to throw shade & I’m here for it! No make-up in her actual kitchen!” A third added: “Even the music… that’s Natalie Cole this will be (an EVER lasting love)!” And a fourth simply said: “THATS how to be relatable, Meghan.”
