Mercedes mechanic could be in hot water with Toto Wolff for behaviour at Singapore GP

By staff6 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Toto Wolff and Mercedes may be celebrating victory in Singapore, but one mechanic could also be in big trouble after what they were caught doing during the race.

A Mercedes mechanic has been caught seemingly watching football while the Singapore GP was ongoing. Toto Wolff and the rest of the crew may still be celebrating their successful weekend’s work at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

George Russell emerged victorious in Singapore, securing his second GP win of the 2025 campaign. The Brit was a staggering 5.43 seconds ahead of second placed Max Verstappen, who had won the previous two GPs.

While there is plenty of cause for celebration, Wolff may also have some questions of his own for his team. During the race, a mechanic appeared to be watching football in the Mercedes pit lane.

Fortunately for the mechanic, it had little to no effect on race proceedings. Russell went on to end Verstappen’s winning run with a brilliant performance in Singapore.

The defending champion and Red Bull had been amassing a lot of momentum having recorded first place wins in Azerbaijan and Italy. Russell put an end to that by winning at a canter.

McLaren have been dominant throughout the season, but only Lando Norris got on the podium, as Oscar Piastri missed out by finishing in fourth place. In what was another boost for Mercedes, young Kimi Antonelli recorded a fifth placed finish, finishing three places above Lewis Hamilton.

In and amongst the joy of celebration, only Wolff knows as to whether he is aware of the mechanic who was watching football during the race. If he is, the German is yet to talk about it publicly.

Given his team’s performances, he may never mention it. After the race, he hailed Russell by saying: “I think we’ve seen George in the past with these moments, but not recently – and that’s the step-up that he has made also this year, that these things don’t happen again.

“He was in control of the race today, eking out an advantage, managing it when Max was a bit closer, and there was not at any moment a doubt that there was any risk in his driving.

“He’s been formidable this year. I haven’t seen mistakes. There were weekends that he himself said I could have done more, that it wasn’t a good race.

“But this happens with any driver. You can see when it merges, the car being in a perfect space, and the driver being on top of things, then that becomes the dominant formula, and that is what we’ve seen here.”

After the victory, Russell said: “I was struggling on Friday, I was struggling Saturday morning, and even in Q1 didn’t feel great, but come Q3, I felt really on it. And the race today, the start was mega.

“Stint one was probably one of the best stints I have done in my career, to pull that 10-second gap to Max, and that was ultimately what gave us the win.”
