Brits are set to be battered by fierce gales this weekend as weather warnings have been put in places for almost the entirety of England and Wales.

The Met Office has issued fresh widespread warnings for wind, with yellow weather alerts set to be in place from 8pm on Sunday, September 14, until 6pm on Monday, September 15. The new 22-hour warning covers the entirety of southern England, Wales and the Midlands.

Inland gusts are predicted to reach between 45-55 mph, while exposed coasts and hills could see winds hitting a whopping 60-70 mph at times. The forecaster warns that strong west or southwesterly winds will hit coastal areas of southwest England and Wales on Sunday evening, before developing more widely inland on Monday morning.

Winds will only slowly ease from the west later in the afternoon and into Monday evening. Brits are being warned to brace themselves as the strong and gusty winds are likely to cause disruption to travel and potential power outages.

Delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport may occur, and some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities could be affected by spray and/or large waves, reports the Express. The Met Office also warns that some bus and train services could be disrupted, resulting in longer journey times.

In addition to this, the Met Office advises: “Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.”

Coastal residents were also issued an additional warning. The Met Office said: “Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

In its weather outlook for Sunday and Monday the Met Office says: “Widely wet and windy on Sunday with coastal gales possible across the southwest. Further blustery showers through Monday, before turning more settled from Tuesday with winds and showers easing.”
