Met Office issues fresh Storm Amy verdict as Brits face hail and thunderstorms

Brits are set to be buffeted by unsettled conditions in the coming days with heavy showers set to dump rain and unleash thunderstorms across much of the country

The Met Office has issued a fresh Storm Amy verdict with Brits set to face hail and thunderstorms.

Brits are set to be buffeted by unsettled conditions in the coming days with a mixture of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds set to affect many areas across the country. The Met Office pointed to low pressure in the Atlantic that will sweep across the UK, bringing harsher weather along with it.

Paul Gundersen, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “We have been monitoring a deepening area of low-pressure over the North Atlantic that might bring impactful weather to the UK, most likely on Sunday and Monday. At present, a named storm is unlikely.”

The forecast comes as Storm Amy barrels toward the UK with heavy showers and winds expected to rattle the country this weekend. The Met office said .there would be a mixture of sunshine and blustery showers as well as a risk of hail and thunder, especially in western areas, on Thursday.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said of the conditions on Thursday morning: “Further west more showers piling their way in and those showers are going to be pretty frequent and heavy across western parts of Scotland. Because of the clear skies following in from his front, we are going to see temperatures dropping a little bit low, even some towns and cities falling into single figures.”

He added: “It’s a showery day. That rain takes a little while to clear away from Orkney and Shetland, but otherwise the big talking point is that there will be plenty of showers coming in from the west as we still have that low towards the northwest of us, our off-flow is well and truly coming in from the west-northwest, so lots of showers arriving.”

Stronger gales are possible along the coast with the driest conditions and sunshine set to be found in the east with temperatures remaining on the cool side. But Brits will also have to contend with miserable conditions tonight with limited sunny spells as thunder and rainfall being an unwelcome constant for many today.

The Met Office said in its forecast from Friday to Sunday: “Remaining changeable with sunny spells and blustery showers, these frequent and occasionally heavy with a risk of hail and thunder. More persistent rain likely arriving on Sunday. Feeling cool.”

Unsettled conditions are also expected into next week with further showers expected from Monday through until Wednesday.
