The Met Office has issued three weather warnings for strong winds this weekend – the national weather agency has told people to ‘prepare’ and ‘plan’ for ‘dangerous’ conditions
The Met Office has issued three yellow weather warnings telling Brits to “prepare” and protect themselves from injury as gusts in excess of 80mph are set to blast a large chunk of the country.
The first two warnings are in place from 7am to midnight on Saturday covering Scotland, parts of northern England, parts of Northern Ireland, and the north coast of Wales.
Gusts of 65mph to 75mph are expected in the Highlands and Eilean Siar, Orkney and Shetland and Strathclyde regions on Saturday, with a small chance of winds in excess of 80mph. Dangerous coastal conditions can be expected too, with large waves an additional hazard, the Met Office said.
The warning on Sunday lasts from midday to 9pm and covers Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western parts of England. The Met Office says: “Gusts of 50mph to 60mph are expected quite widely, and around some exposed coasts and hills of gusts 70mph are possible, especially in the north and west. In addition, squally showers are likely with some hail and thunder possible in places.
“This has the potential to cause delays to public transport and some disruption to the road network, which may have a greater than usual impact given the busier pre-Christmas weekend travel. Dangerous coastal conditions can be expected too, with large waves an additional hazard.”
