Met Office tells Brits in 64 places to check seven items around their homes

The Met Office has issued another yellow weather warning urging Brits in 64 areas across the country to take precautions as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected

The Met Office has warned residents in 64 areas across the UK to take precautions and check items around their homes ahead of a yellow weather warning.

The Met Office advice comes as parts of the country brace for heavy showers, lightning, and gusty winds which could pose a risk to both property and personal safety. The thunderstorm warning comes into effect on Thursday from 2am until 5pm, as a band of heavy showers and thunderstorms moves across the UK.

The Met Office says this could bring localised flooding, spray, and sudden flash flooding, creating hazardous driving conditions and potential road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, delays and cancellations to train and bus services are possible, while power cuts and service disruptions could affect some homes and businesses.

There is also a chance that homes and buildings could suffer damage from floodwater, hail, strong winds, or lightning strikes. To minimise these risks, the Met Office advises those in vulnerable areas to protect their property and ensure people are safe.

Residents are urged to secure moveable objects and temporary structures before the gusty conditions arrive. The seven items specifically highlighted are bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences. Taking these precautions early can help prevent damage and reduce the risk of injury.

The Met Office warning states: “Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Before gusty winds arrive, check to ensure moveable objects or temporary structures are well secured. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences.

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car). Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground.”

Areas expected to be affected include Nottingham, Derby, Durham, Lancashire, Manchester, Yorkshire, Cardiff, Swansea, and Gloucestershire. A separate weather map by WXCharts shows a large band of rain moving across the UK, with London, Belfast and areas of Scotland also seemingly set for some showers on Thursday.
