Micah Richards, Jamie Carragher and co were back in action to cover the Champions League and the former suffered a wardrobe malfunction when Raphinha scored a dramatic winner for Barcelona
It was an eventful night for Micah Richards as the Champions League returned to action.
The former Manchester City defender saw his own return to CBS on Tuesday evening alongside a lively team of Kate Scott, Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher to take in the likes of Liverpool victory and Aston Villa defeat. But it was Barcelona that probably left the strongest impression on the team.
Making the trip to Benfica, Hansi Flick’s side fell 3-1 behind thanks to Vangelis Pavlidis’ hat-trick. The Catalan club were 4-2 down as late as the 78th minute before Robert Lewandowski scored a second penalty and Eric Garcia got on the scoresheet.
Raphinha ensured the game didn’t end as a draw and his 96th-minute strike saw Barca take a 5-4 lead and saw it was popping off in the CBS studio, literally. “Take your time, pass,” came the call from Richards before he and Carragher erupted behind their desk.
Richards clambered to his feet and was left open-mouthed, but not from what he’d just witnessed. The pundit’s head quickly darted around before a faint whisper of ‘I’ve lost a button’ escaped from his mouth.
The 36-year-old’s suit jacket had flung open as he rose to his feet with the button that had been fastened, flying off to leave his colleagues in raptures of laughter. Assessing the moment afterwards, Richards said: “I had too much to eat didn’t I?”
“Very big problem,” he added as he attempted to cover himself with the jacket.
It was a tough night on the fashion front for the ex-Aston Villa ace who was targeted for his new hairstyle too. Richards was simply savaged by Carragher.
“New you, who dis?” Scott asked Richards on the show. “I look fantastic, don’t I?” Richards brashly replied. Carragher had a differing opinion. “It doesn’t suit you. I’m saying that as a friend,” the ex-Liverpool defender said. Richards typically burst out laughing and said: “Could you not say that off air?”
The pundit, who burst onto the scene, said it was a case of ‘new year, new me’ for his new do. Scott appeared to be a fan of the change and said it was ‘nice and crispy’.
The show then pulled up a photograph of Richards’ former look alongside his new one. Carragher made his feelings clear: “Honestly, you look awful. You look so cool on the other one. Not cool. Why did you do that?”
