Michael Carrick SACKED by Middlesbrough as Championship club go in new direction

By staff4 June 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Michael Carrick has been dismissed by Middlesbrough after failing to deliver a place in the Championship play-offs

Michael Carrick has been sacked by Middlesbrough after they missed out on the Championship play-offs. Boro finished the 2024/25 season in 10th place, four points adrift of the play-offs.

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Carrick had been in charge of Boro since October 2022, but has been dismissed after concluding his third season in charge.

“Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick,” Boro said in a statement. “Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club.

“We’d like thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future. The club will be making no further comment at this stage.”

Transfer news LIVE: Mbeumo to Man Utd, Wirtz to Liverpool update, Man City land £46m deal

Man Utd transfer target Bryan Mbeumo performed U-turn after private meeting with his hero

Carrick made a brilliant start to life as Boro manager, in his first coaching role after a brief stint as United caretaker. He won 16 of his first 23 games in charge, guiding his team from the relegation zone to the play-offs, before losing in the semi-finals to Coventry.

They reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup in his second season in charge, but ended up finishing 8th in the Championship, just short of the play-offs. His third season, when a shot at promotion was missed again, has now proven fatal.

The 43-year-old departs with a record of 63 wins from 136 games in charge of Boro, who will now search for a new boss.

Carrick’s former England team-mate Joe Cole has tipped him to be in the running for the Tottenham job after Ange Postecoglou is sacked.

He told Paddy Power: “At Tottenham, Daniel Levy is running out of managerial candidates for the job. He’s gone big, he’s gone bold, and he’s gone off the beaten track, but none of them seem to have worked.

“Michael Carrick could be a good option for the manager’s job. An ex-Spurs player, who understands the club, would be quite nice. Also, I’d like to see Glenn Hoddle back at the club in some capacity.

“I know Tottenham fans would love to see him back and he’s got the best football brain I know. I’d love to see Glenn Hoddle back in the club in some capacity, maybe supporting Michael Carrick. The club needs bringing together because it was really torn at times last season.”
