Michael Owen was complimentary about the state of Manchester United’s performance on Thursday night but that has been laughed off by Specsavers, who have mocked the ex-pundit
Michael Owen claimed that Manchester United were “a good watch again” – only for Specsavers to mock the pundit.
Owen played for the Red Devils later in his career but has had to watch the Premier League giants continue to underwhelm. A host of managers have tried and failed to make them a champion outfit again following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.
They’ve all fallen short and some have made United a particularly hard watch. A negative style of player or a lack of obvious identity have been among the criticisms levelled at the Manchester outfit. Now Ruben Amorim has arrived and took charge of his second game on Thursday night.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss was renowned for a clear philosophy whilst in Portugal and has made it known that he will stop at nothing to implement his style. That was evident at times against Bodo/Glimt, but United still struggled to a 3-2 win and Owen’s observations have been laughed off by the optical retail chain.
He said: “It’s been over 11 years in the making but @ManUtd are all of a sudden good to watch again! Improvement required everywhere you look but this is now a team with potential written all over it.”
Specsavers Twitter account were quick to hit back, suggesting they didn’t share his view, as they said: “Got a free half hour tomorrow?”
Amorim had seen United draw his first game at Ipswich before they needed to come from 2-1 down to secure three points in the Europa League. The new manager claimed they had no control throughout the contest at Old Trafford despite the entertaining nature of the game.
“I get anxious because I don’t know what will happen,” he told TNT Sports. “We don’t control anything at the moment. I don’t know the players and we have not worked a lot together. We go to the game excited, but at the same time you are nervous because you don’t know how the game will go.”
Two-goal hero Rasmus Hojlund has already praised the new system implemented by Amorim, knowing it from his time at Atalanta. “He told me not to think too much about the guys behind me and just work on what I can see in front of me. We saw that with the first goal,” said the Dane.
“Obviously it’s going to take time [to adjust to his style] but we can already see some patterns. Now it’s time for us to build. For me this system reminds me of how I played in a 3-4-3 at Atalanta. It suits me well.”
