Mohamed Salah scored a goal and registered two assists in Liverpool’s 5-0 win at West Ham and was faced with questions on his future after another player of the match display
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah said he was still “far away” from being able to provide definitive good news on a new contract.
Salah was player of the match at the London Stadium as Liverpool put five past West Ham. He scored once himself and also set up goals for Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota as the Reds ended the calendar year with a win.
He is one of three Liverpool players out of contract at the end of the campaign, along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander Arnold. However, he indicated there’s still work to be done.
“No, we are far away from that,” Salah told Sky Sports when asked if there would be good news soon. “I don’t want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing really [has] moved on but for now I’m focused on the team and hopefully we win the Premier League”
Salah’s starring role was in marked contrast to his previous trip to the London Stadium. Back in April, the Egyptian was involved in a row with Liverpool’s then-manager Jurgen Klopp, and admitted his team-mates had brought it up before kick-off on Sunday.
“I will do my best for the team to win the trophy,” he said after helping Arne Slot’s team move eight points clear at the top. “There is a few other teams catching up with us and we need to stay focused and humble and go again.
“I am just trying to enjoy the game. At the end of the day I came here for the result and I wanted to do something in the game, but I am almost hungry for more.”

Former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp addressed Salah’s situation in the Sky Sports studio. He isn’t the only Liverpool man out of contract in the summer, with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the same situation, and Redknapp spoke about the trio.
“They are all hungry and they want to be successful,” Redknapp said. “The first thing they want is to win the Premier League. Then secondly they will want to sort their contracts out. Because Mo Salah is playing so well he has forced Liverpool to give him what he wants.”
Liverpool’s win took them eight points clear of Nottingham Forest, who moved into second spot with a win away to Everton. Chelsea can go second themselves with a win at Ipswich on Monday, though, while Arsenal could then move within six of the league leaders with victory at Brentford on New Year’s Day.
