A Cumbrian village that was once the dwelling place of William Wordsworth is renowned for its stunning lake with “crystal clear” waters and “picturesque” landscape.

Grasmere, positioned at the heart of the Lake District, sits alongside Grasmere Lake and is encircled by fells and peaks.

Those who venture here can browse the local shops, cafes, and taverns, pay their respects at the legendary poet’s resting place, and soak up the spectacular vistas.

Grasmere is characterised by its ancient cottages and blue-green slate dwellings. The village centre features a church, St Oswald’s, and Dove Cottage, Wordsworth’s former residence.

Those exploring the cottage can journey back in time as the property has been restored to life with aromas, sounds and scenes that conjure up memories spanning over two centuries, reports the Express.

The lake, which has stirred countless poets and artists throughout the ages, provides a peaceful stroll, and also acts as the starting point for climbing the Helvellyn range, Fairfield and Dollywagon Pike. Grasmere Lake ranks among the tiniest in the region at merely a mile in length, yet it continues to attract visitors from across the nation, be they ramblers, cyclists, or those simply seeking to admire the panorama.

Those who fancy a dip can take to the lake, whilst canoes and rowing boats are available for hire for anyone wishing to discover the waters.

Grasmere is accessible via the 599 bus route connecting Bowness, Windermere, Rydal and Grasmere – and travellers from Lancaster and Kendal can catch the 555 service to Keswick passing through the locale. One visitor described the lake as “calm and flat”, adding: “The water is crystal clear, and even in shallow water, fish are present. I swam a fair way out, and could still see my feet in the deep. A totally breathtaking lake, and an unforgettable swim.”

Another praised the walk around the lake as one of the “most beautiful and rewarding” in the Lake District. A third said: “There is a great circular walk around Grasmere from the village that is very manageable. It is incredibly picturesque and peaceful. There is a great stopping point at the other end of the lake to have a picnic and enjoy the views.”

Meanwhile, another visitor added: “A fabulous short walk around Grasmere lake with some stunning views. Nice, easy to follow footpath and not at all challenging. Ideal if stopping in Grasmere to pass a couple of hours on this gentle stroll and recommend stopping for a warm drink at Faeryland.”
