Mother caught on hospital CCTV subjecting toddler son to unimaginable act

Mum Alexandra Marie Frost will now serve 10 years behind bars after devastating CCTV footage confirmed hospital staff’s worst suspicions about the treatment of her two-year-old son

A woman has been given a 10-year prison sentence after chilling CCTV footage revealed her shocking treatment of her young son.

Alexandra Marie Frost, 27, first brought her two-year-old son to the hospital back in March 2023, where it was found that he had “low blood sugar levels that required medical intervention, including the administration of glucose, and lab test results indicated his insulin levels were very high.”

Healthcare professionals noticed a decline in the toddler’s condition, noting that there “appeared to be anomalies”, whereby the little boy’s glucose levels would fall and then stabilise.

They began to suspect that this was a case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental health condition whereby a parent or caregiver invents symptoms or even creates real symptoms to make it appear as though their child is sick.

Staff at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital decided to look into their suspicions further and so activated a camera in the boy’s hospital room, People reports. The following day, CCTV footage had captured Frost holding a syringe, which she used to inject her son in the foot.

According to a warrant obtained by the publication, “After injecting [her son’s] foot, Frost walks to where the ‘SHARPS’ container is located and appeared to place the syringe into the container.

Prior to the injections [victim] appeared to be calm, and when Frost injected his foot, [victim] becomes agitated and screams consistent with being in pain.”

Medical staff informed investigators that being injected with insulin “will lower a person’s glucose levels, which can cause serious health problems, including death.

As reported by The Gazette, a UIHC endocrinologist told officers that the only reason for the child’s abnormal glucose levels would be due to an “external” insulin injection, and would not have been the fault of hospital staff. The medic also confirmed that the toddler did not have a medical issue that would require treatment with insulin.

As stated in the affidavit, an officer photographed a small prick or injection site on the child’s unbandaged foot. The child’s nurse confirmed that the hospital would only administer injections on the bottom of the foot, not the top, and it would be bandaged afterwards.

Frost, from Cedar Rapids, was reportedly the only individual who was regularly with her son during his five-day stay at the hospital.

Back in June, Frost pleaded guilty to child endangerment resulting in bodily injury and administering harmful substances, as confirmed by the Johnson County Attorney’s Office.

She was handed the ten-year prison sentence on Friday, August 29, with Sixth Judicial District Judge Mike Harris handing down the maximum sentence of five years for each of her charges, which will be served consecutively.

The unnamed child was removed from Frost’s care by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Since then, he has had no more problems with his glucose levels, as per the warrant.
