Alexander Zurawski, 6, was found dead at the family home in Swansea last year after having suffered a ‘significant’ neck injury. His mum Karolina Zurawska, 41, has admitted killing him
A mum has admitted killing her 6-year-old son and attempting to murder her dad on the same day.
Youngster Alexander Zurawski was found dead at the family home in Swansea after suffering a “significant” neck injury on August 29 last year. His mum Karolina Zurawska, 41, appeared at Swansea Crown Court this morning where she pleaded guilty to both manslaughter and attempted murder – after also trying to kill her own father, Krzysztof Siwy, on the same day.
The court heard Karolina was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and had therefore entered the pleas on the grounds of diminished responsibility. She was remanded in custody until her sentencing on April 25.
Alexander’s family previously described him as a “very kind child” who was always well behaved and “never naughty”. Paying tribute to him, they added: “He loved playing with his little sister and playing with his dog, Daisy. He was amazing [and] always helpful. Always eager to assist with cooking and cleaning.”
Alexander, who spoke both English and Polish, was “very clever and mature for his age”, they added, and had a “great understanding of facts”. He attended Whitestone Primary School in West Cross, Swansea, where head teacher Bethan Peterson said he was “popular among his peers”.
She said: “He was an extremely loved and popular boy… with all who knew him” and a “delightful, determined little boy whose tenacity and positive demeanour ensured his success in all he undertook”. Ms Peterson said Alexander would be “sadly missed” and the school community was “devastated” by the news of his death.
In the days following the incident, Chief Superintendent Chris Truscott, divisional commander for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, said: “This is a distressing incident which has been a tremendous shock to the local community. The local community has been outstanding in their support of our investigation, and we would like to thank all of them for their patience during what has been a traumatic few days.
“A police presence will be retained in the local area over the coming days in order to provide advice and reassurance. Our thoughts are with Alexander’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
